Is "NVIDIA Settings Update Manager Service" necessary?

Has anyone noticed a new service installed on your computer - NVIDIA Settings Update Manager Service? Like the name implies, it is used to check for new updates from the NVIDIA server. It was automatically installed on my PC today. :unsure:

I question that this is even necessary. Before I disable it I wanted your opinion on the matter, in case you fine knowledgeable people recommend leaving it alone.

I run Windows 7.

yup and you'll see a new user too UpdateUser

So Nergal, you advise to just leave it alone and let it do its thing?

I do that but if you dislike auto updates it's safe to disable and can be run manually

Thank you Nergal for your lightning fast responses :)

:lol: I just happen to be checking the new posts and have instant notify set to my email alert … Errr I mean yeah I’m a :ph34r:

:D Cheers!

@razz,

just to let you know first hand, I have been stopping/removing that nvidia auto-update feature for at least the last 6 months (probably more like 12) will no ill effects.

of course, as you state, you simply lose the auto update feature which, for me, wasn't a biggie, as I manually update my drivers at best, and at worst just leave them for Windows Update to pick up.

What mta said.

Mine is also turned off.

I think I have read elsewhere that the Updatususer account won't be created if you install drivers manually and disable auto-updates inside installation options.

Thank you mta & hazelnut. I'm going to disable it too.

It's mind boggling how many installers want to set an update service now. :rolleyes:
