Internet tweaks

OK, i went to a site to test my upload/download speeds, and scored extremely poorly. Are there any freeware programs out there and/or tweaks to speed up my internet connection?

I have decently fast computers, and high speed dsl, so they should have scored higher.

Im not running software firewalls, anti virus, etc. but am using a router.

Thanks! :)

Unless your router is configured strangely, there isn't really anything you can do to speed up your internet.

Basically you get the bandwidth speeds your isp gives you. At least thats my experience, maybe someone knows something I don't. :P

One easy test to make sure its not your router would be to try a direct connection to your modem and see if you get the same speeds.

You may want to have a look at Cablenut.I've had a play with it and it seems OK with any changes being easy to undo.

You can make your own "CableNut Custom Setting" files save them for later use, or distribute them to anyone with the CableNut program. Dialup, Cable, DSL, and Satellite connections are supported out of the box. If you don't have one of the supported connection types don't worry you can visit the site, and ask the CableNut team for help. Best of all it is freeware

Cablenut

Did you notice any speed increase though?

Did you notice any speed increase though?

Not really but I already have a fast connection. There are so many settings that you just may hit a sweetspot.

Try TCP Optimizer: http://www.speedguide.net/downloads.php

I'm a bit skeptical that these programs actually work. All I can say is if you try them make sure they have an undo feature first. :D

I'll second that recommendation. Improved my tested speeds and improved my connection quality when online gaming.

Or get Google Tisp :D

Or get Google Tisp

lol that was very funny :P

Personally i find DrTCP to be better as TCP Optimizer cased fluctuation's with my download speed. Once you have DrTCP use this site to configure the settings

or

but make the MTU 1500

I've never noticed any of the MTU, etc., modifying applications making any difference on my WinXP PC. However when I used Win98 I know they worked because without using them on dial-up I had a maximum download speed of like 3.0k-3.5k, and simply running something like TCP Optimizer was enough to get it to average at about 5.0k and max out at about 5.5k.

Now even with DSL (low-end DSL that is) there still isn't enough speed, and the optimizations done via PC Magazine's Registry Robot have no effect from what I've seen.

but make the MTU 1500

Actually thats not right, if you use a PPoE connection the maximum MTU is 1480 or 1492 depending on the type off PPoE:

There is no known way to raise MTU in WinXP from 1480. This issue is seen only by WinXP users who are connecting with the built-in PPPoE connection software. If you change to RASPPPoE, or use a router instead, your MTU should then default to 1492.

I am not using PPPoE i am using PPPoA and i have read on some forums that you can raise it to that level with PPPoA. Whether if that is corret or not does not really bother me as it has done no harm
