how to defragment larger files

Hi.

Defraggler is unable to defragment a big file.

it tells "Nothing done", but the file remains still fragmented after 8 hours.

the file is not in use (disc E:\)

see foto please.

what to do?

thanks a lot

best,

Go to "Lista file" and check it there. Use the "defragment selected" option afterwards.

Thank you for your reply.

I did this task too (selected file only), but the same effects.

this file 170GB cannot be defragmented.

:(

Maybe it's being used by a certain process. Open up task manager and look for clues there.

very strange. because this file is a macrium image .mrimg in disc E:\

If you EXPLORE or MOUNT a partition in a Macrium *.mrimg then Windows Explorer will see a new Partition Letter

then that file (and any previous backups in the same FULL / DIFF / INC series) is OWNED by the system until you UNMOUNT that new Partition.

Also be aware that you may have Macrium services running which may also want to own *.mrimg files.

I have deleted *.mrimg files without any difficulty,

but I only allow the minimum of services,

and I never tried deleting one whilst the Macrium GUI was running.

Defrag is not the same as Delete, but I suspect Access restrictions to be similar.

Personally I will never defrag a Macrium image file because :-

1.

It occupies innumerable seconds to defrag a 170 GB file,

After which the only benefit is perhaps the avoidance of less than 0.1 Second extra time from an extra track seek when the head skips from one fragment to the next,

and this only happens if you should need to read the file.

2.

I know Windows will go wrong in the worst possible way at the worst possible time,

and that is my reason for using Macrium.

The most horrendously worst possible time for Windows to go wrong is when it is defragging my Macrium image that could be my only hope of survival.

Alan

thank you Alan_B!

yes, macrium is wonderful :))

ok, partition is unmounted.

yes, I have deleted mrimg tto : no problems.

I have the same image in external hdd's like L:\ amd M:\ (usb)

in the second hdd E:\ I have macrium image of C:\ (active partition): no problems with defraggler, but the file is only 60GB.

problem with the image of E:\ (saved on the same disc E:\ 170GB)

also related to the defragmentation of E:\:

I will defragmet only the fragmented files in E:\ (not the whole disc) leaving off the macrium image of E (whilst macrium image of C.\ has been defragmented fine. no issue. perhaps defraggler encountred problems with this very big file.

ok, I agree with your explanation.

thank you for your reply.

Yep. You don't usually need to defragment backup files. It could corrupt them and you won't notice any reading speed improvements.

ok. thank you :)
