Clicking the red X in the top right hand corner is the usual way.
If that doesn't work you could bring up taskmanager and end it's process there.
Not closing the normal way could relate to malware so may I suggest posting a hijackthis log in the appropriate forum.

Have you got any extensions installed, these can often be the cause of FF problems. Or as Humpty suggested, it may be even malware/virus related. Or it may just be a corrupt install requiring reinstall.
It really is worth sticking with if you can find out and fix whatever is causing the problems.

The first thing to do is try running Firefox in safe mode
Start > Mozilla Firefox > (safe mode). This disables any themes or extensions you've added and runs Firefox in its default setting. If everything seems fine then you know that one of your extensions is the culprit.
