History not clearing on v7 and v6

Cleaning not clearing history I have read all options to fix but nothing is working.

History of what?

A browser? If so which browser?

Custom Clean or Health Check?

Which CCleaner build?

Windows 10 or Windows 11?

Browser is Firefox. windows 11 I have tried v7.3 v7.4 and rolled back to v6.39 custom clean and history is checked to be cleaned on the applications tab for firefox. It looks as if it cleaned its harder to tell on v7 v6 is so much easier to see. When I reopen firefox my history is still all there. I find the registry cleaner is not as good as v6 as it shows you all the registry entries

I have tried all the options been suggested, making sure no firefox is running in taskmanager, running it as adminstrator, signing out of firefox. Making sure sync is off, disabled McAfee etc

Hi @RaceyLady,
I am not able to replicate this issue, after a Custom Clean of Firefox on default setting the history is removed.

Please let me know what version of Firefox you are using? My test was performed on v147.0.2

Also if the history in Firefox is showing in a different location to that shown above please let me know so I can continue to investigate this issue.

Just a further, possibly relevant, point:

Is your Firefox downloaded direct from Mozilla, or did you get it from the Microsoft Store?

The one from the MS Store saves cache files, etc. in different locations to where the “original” Firefox puts them.

My Firefox is the same as yourself 147.02

This issue I have has only started in the last week it worked well before

It was downloaded direct from Mozilla

I reverted back to the 6.39 hoping it would work, I have not upgraded to 7.4 yet here are settings I have always used for custom clean

Do you think I have an issue with Firefox and to reinstall Firefox?

Hi RaceyLady:

Open Firefox, go to History | Clear Recent History, select “Browsing & download history” and “Temporary cached files and pages” as shown below (plus any other items you would like to purge), and click the blue Clear button. If that correctly clears your browsing history your Firefox browser is not the problem.

NOTE: I stopped using CCleaner to clean my default Firefox browser a few years ago after a bug in CCleaner damaged several Firefox browser extensions (see circcc’s 01-Jul-2020 topic Problem with Firefox 79) so all options for cleaning Firefox are disabled in my CCleaner v6.39 Custom Clean settings. Instead, I use my built-in Firefox settings at Privacy & Security | History to automatically clear most of my browsing history (e.g., cookies and site data, etc.) each time I exit Firefox. See the Mozilla support article Delete browsing, search and download history on Firefox.

Hi All,
To help us investigate the issue and understand what may be happening, please generate CCleaner log files by following the steps below:

  1. Download and install the CCleaner Support Tool using the link below:
    https://download.ccleaner.com/CCleanerSupportTool.exe
  2. Once installed, run the tool to generate the logs.
  3. At the end of the process, you’ll receive a 5-digit File ID.
  4. Please share that File ID with me so I can review the logs and investigate further.

If you run into any problems or have questions, please let me know.

I sent you the file ID in PM

Thank you I will wait fir the update before I back to v7 as I am still using 6.39

Hi @Laurence_CCleaner I updated to the latest version today that says the firefox bug is fixed, sorry to say it did not clean my firefox history. Reverted back to using the firefox tool instead.

Sorry, you are still experiencing this issue.
Please could you generate me a new set of log files using the CCleaner Support tool and send me the 4 digit file ID so I can locate these in our system.
Please could you also create a screen recording using the Windows Snipping Tool so we can understand the issue you are experiencing better. Be sure to include where you are seeing the history still showing in Firefox.

  1. Press Windows Key + Shift + R to open the recording menu.

  2. Select the area of the screen to record.

  3. Click “Start”.

  4. Select “Stop” to finish, then save your recording.

If you have any issues, please message me back.

Hi @RaceyLady,
We have recently released v7.6 for CCleaner.
Please let me know if you are still experiencing this issue after updating to V7.6?

Hi @Laurence_CCleaner

Updated to V7.6 same old story all history is still there.

Think its time for me to ditch CCleaner for good this time after using it for 20 years with no problems time for it to go permanently

Hey RaceyLady, this is a common headache with the newer versions of CCleaner. Usually, it’s because the browser is still “awake” in the background or a specific setting is blocking the cleanup.

Try this:

  • Force Close Browsers: CCleaner can’t touch history files if the browser is even partially running. Open your Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc) and make sure all instances of Chrome, Edge, or Firefox are fully killed.

  • Disable “Fast Startup”: Windows often keeps browser processes in a suspended state for speed. Go to Control Panel > Power Options > Choose what the power buttons do and uncheck “Turn on fast startup.”

  • Check “Sync” Settings: If you’re signed into a Google or Microsoft account, the browser might be re-syncing your history from the cloud immediately after CCleaner deletes it. Try signing out or pausing sync temporarily to see if it clears.

  • Run as Admin: Right-click the CCleaner icon and select “Run as administrator” to ensure it has the permissions needed to modify system folders.
