help please ... need a couple questions re Recuva

I, too, have started Recuva to hopefully recover some backup files that i had put on a flash drive... but there is the time factor... right now i'm looking at 11 more days!

two questions for now...

1 - do i diminish my chances of recovering the files if i stop this process that's been started by Recuva and has been going for about 40 hours now? can i stop the procedure and start on another computer (desktop)?

2 - does the Recuva program work best or require that the computer you are using for the file recovery if you are not doing others things on said computer... can i use my computer while Recuva is scanning/working?

i hope that i can start this on another desktop... right now my productivity level has dropped severely!!!

thanks in advance for any replies/info :)

have a great day!

we live in an area that is prone to power outages... especially in stormy weather which we have some coming... i'll lose power at least once before 11 days is up!

Thruthseeker, you need to start your own business thread, no matter how simular this one seems to you (other moderators, i'd split to a new thread but unsure how/if-i-can on this app).

do you mean just start a new topic?

i put it here since it seemed like one or more of the posters here would probably know the answers

Please, yes. Same topic causes distraction from vital issues and posts. Do not worry the members in this thread and many others will happily aid you in a new one, your issue and kevn's will be able to receive the care they need via focused manner given in different threads.

Posts (double) merged into one thread.

1) You won't diminish your recovery chances by running Recuva on a different pc. However how are you going to run it against your problem disk?

2) Everything you do on the partition you are trying to recover from will diminish the chances of recovery, by writing new files to the partition, thus increasing the chances of overwriting data you want to recover.

i am trying to recover files from a USB/flash drive... only 3GB total... the flash was not full ... about 2/3 ... it's stating that i have 11-13 days left in the process... in other places i've read about how 'fast' the recuva program is... but it's not the case for me...

i'm sorry i didn't state it more specifically earlier... but i guess my question would be more aptly and precisely put this way...

can i stop a Recuva scan on a flash drive in a USB port on one desktop and take it to another desktop without diminishing my chances of file recovery?

and secondly...

since the drive i'm trying to recover data from is a USB drive... does it matter if i actively use the desktop that the USB is plugged into?

thanks... i hope i've worded it correctly...

1) Yes

2) No, as long as you don't access the flash drive (apart from Recuva)

Scanning a 3 gb flash drive should take about 10 seconds. I don't know what's happening with yours.

Thank you, Augeas for answering so quickly!

is there a way to find out what is happening and what is causing it to go so very slow?

Probably, but I'm not very knowledgeable in that area. Perhaps an I/O expert will chip in.

i decided to stop the scan and restart it on another computer... when i stopped the scan, even though it didn't say that i was finished with stage one yet, it displayed a list of files found in the scan... so i decided to try and restore them from the list... however, once i started doing so, it came up with an estimate of 8 days to complete the job!

since i couldn't wait another 8 days, i aborted the restoration... now the scan will have to be and will be started on another desktop here... i guess i'll find out then, if the second desktop will also take 'days' to complete or if will run in less time such as Augeas said... heck... even though an hour is longer than a few seconds, an hour is better than 13 days!

so keep y'all keep your fingers crossed... maybe the new scan will be much shorter... i'll post the results once i am done... but please if anyone has any helpful info or insight, please do share with me...

have a great day! and thank you, Augeas, for responding to my plight...

Ran recuva again on the flash drive using a different desktop ... in less than 12 hours (less than 1/3 of the time to perform ONLY part of the test on the first desktop) it gave me results of only 54 'found files'... though 9 said excellent chances of being recovered... NONE of the files were recovered...

presently running a third scan on the usb flash drive using the second desktop... Recuva has found over 10,000 files in less than 1 - 1/2 hours... and states there is 7 hours left in this procedure/test/scan... hopefully, i will be able to actually recover any 'found files' this time... i guess time will tell...
