The true explanation of this is that the whole debacle is a Piriform created mess which should have never happened.

Correct, but unfortunately the management in many companies is only fixated on maximizing profits, which is why CCleaner is probably also being tested to see whether users of the free version are willing to pay for "Custom Clean"...
Being honest here, those who's Custom Clean isn't working at all when they click on 'Run Cleaner' just want that button fixed.
They are not at this point interested in any sidetracking about the colour of an entirely different button.
The colour of that Upgrade/Get Pro button is irrelevant to the problem, the different wording just indicates if you may have a problem variant or not - it is not that Upgrade/Get Pro button that is the problem in itself.

Strange, I've never read such a reaction from you before. Obviously you now feel personally attacked just because you were wrong with an assumption. It happens to everyone, and there's no reason to get upset about it. And you should also be honest about the fact that you started this discussion. Because I just wanted to point out to Major Paiyne that he can reset the button if it bothers him with his now working installation - nothing more:

If you are annoyed by the colored “Upgrade” button, you can set the following registry value to “0” (zero):

I hope that clarifies everything and we can move forward. Best regards.
The point is APMichael is that Piriform shouldn't be playing around with buttons, colours and what usage they have. Users should not be expected to do registry work in order to change button colours that shouldn't be there.
It'a almost like Piriform has set up a laboratory to test out users reactions.
'Let's try out different colour buttons to gauge reactions.
''Let's do a button which won't let them use custom clean on the free version unless they buy it first (hope they do !!)''
They should be ashamed of themselves.
@hazelnut Correct and I fully agree with you. I suspect that's really what's going on there at the moment.
It's the lack of any official response to these reports, or our flagging of the issue, that is bugging me. (pun intended).
Putting this here for information - as the 'Important announcement' mentioned (and quoted in this link) has now been removed
And a further update on this situation:
Uninstalled Ccleaner FREE.

Lets assume that's what the makers of the program were after all along... ...no free users, and instead a preference for free users to buy a pro or whatever non-free version of it. Basically a subscription service.
Whenever a software that I've used for a long time starts behaving differently, I run checks for malware.
To reduce the frequency of this, I don't let anything automatically update or upgrade. In addition to any internal settings, I block it with a firewall.
If this isn't possible, I use some other software.
The subscription model is a gamble, I guess.
You lose some customers who want their software to "stand alone".
I completely understand your frustration, and it’s unfortunate to see such changes with CCleaner. It’s been a great tool for many of us over the years, and I hope they reconsider and bring back a more accessible free version. Wishing you the best in finding an alternative that works for you!

You have replied to a year old thread which is about something that was happening back then - an experimental ‘Paywall’ - it was there for some people, not everybody, and it stopped happening after a while.
To be clear - What was being discussed here stopped happening and hasn’t been seen again since.*
Many of the images that were posted at that time are no longer available - and so the whole post is missing important bits.
Because it is old and missing bits I will close this thread.
*If you have noticed something “Paywall” like that you think is similar to what was happening back a year ago then please start your own thread with details and we can investigate further if we get more reports.
