Google Chrome (BETA)

Google Chrome is a browser that combines a minimal design with sophisticated technology to make the web faster, safer, and easier.

Google Chrome

Hi Humpty, there's a lad just posted in the CCleaner section about this browser, looking to clean history etc, and it piqued my curiosity.

I'll have to fire up Returnil and give it a try. Appreciate the link.

Gave it a brief run here and it seemed quite usable.

The memory usage seems to be controlled exceptionally well.

With one tab open it was only using 14 meg memory then I opened up six tabs with the mem going up to 50 meg with it dropping back to 20 meg after closing all but one tab.

Speed is on par with FF but I really can't see myself using Chrome fulltime as I just like FF and my addons too much atm.

Chrome is still in Beta though so I don't know. I'm not even going to try it to be honest.

They had some story about it on the news saying it was competition for Microsoft Explorer - they should've said Microsoft Internet Explorer.

Running it in Returnil for the past few hours no problems yet,it opens all my pages fine. Nice simple clean and fast browser.

I'm trying it on my old 500MHZ 512MB RAM PIII system and it is quite snappy.

If multiple tabs are opened then I think that each tab runs in it's own memory space so if one page crashes only that page will and not the others?

Open a couple of extra tabs and check in taskmanager.

Chrome has it's own Task Manager built in so you can see what each tab is using.

This speed test shows Chrome is much faster with Javascript than the other browsers. http://www.download.com/8301-2007_4-100308...tag=mncol;title

it's a very nice browser, but until it gets more options and addons, i can't see myself leaving firefox....

Not my cup of tea, and an interesting comment at the bottom of the page in that speed test:

Second, my apologies here to Opera, whose browser I don't have installed.

Why not, it's a very popular browser now, and probably more significant in the context of this speed test, a fast browser.

I cant believe people are actually praising this thing. I think the google name is blinding them from the truth. The interface of this browser is such crap that I cant imagine anyone trying to do serious web surfing on it. Seriously... you cant change the homepage.. you can only have it load additional pages? Not to mention there is no search bar, menu bar, or.... options! Oh and its just a beta right? Well your also forgetting that just about everything google does stays in beta pretty much forever so its not getting better any time soon. :P

If you like this then you probably would like safari because in my view they both make the same mistakes. (but at least you can make safari work the way you want it and not the way google does.)

Oh and there is also this if your a conspiracy theorist:

I was wondering when I watched that news report about it if they're going to keep all the data on you like where you've browsed, what you've downloaded, etc., since they do after all keep all searches that everyone makes and never delete it. That's called data mining for those that don't know.

I think I agree with most in here I am trying Google Chrome it is fast but I will stick with Firefox I like the toys that come with Firefox sorry the addons that come with Firefox lol.

They have since backed off a little on their EULA: http://gizmodo.com/5045050/google-updating...-be-less-creepy.

Well I played with Chrome for an hour or so in a VM but I think I'll be sticking with FF.

Doesn't work with Sandboxie properly unless low level access is allowed which is less secure.

Still in beta but it does have potential though.

Sandboxie Forum Discussion on Chrome

We will let this pass through since Chrome is still in beta, but still: Chrome should not crash that easily. One of our readers noticed that Chrome and all of its tabs will crash as soon as the two characters ?:%? are entered in the URL bar. Chrome?s message: ?Whoa! Google Chrome has crashed. Restart now??

How to crash Chrome

One of the most impressive features in Google's open source Chrome web browser is V8, a high-performance JavaScript virtual machine that was developed by a team of specialists in Denmark. Although Chrome's performance beats the current stable version of Firefox, benchmarks show that Mozilla's next-generation JavaScript engine actually outperforms V8.

The interface of Google Chrome is prettty good. It is the style i like  but it does not work so good on my computer.

but it does not work so good on my computer.

As in stability, or something else?

OK, first impression: "Cheeeze-o-petes, where's all my stuff?"

Worked OK. Runs a little heavier in a virtual machine than does IE. This scr.shot is in a vm with 2400 mb available ram. Both Chrome and IE open, both have 1 tab up.

Am I reading it right that Chrome is using about twice as much ram as IE? Also, google update phones home when the vm is restarted?

edit: Well OK, the miserable thing had 2 tabs open...who knew...still about the same or a bit heavier that IE.

1 - Wrong. Upon reading this, I tested, and sure enough, I was able to load Chrome the way I wanted, with the homepage I wanted.

2 - Wrong again. Tinker with it before making assumptions. The options menu is how I was able to change homepage :P

Yes you can change your Homepage and its faster than almost all other browsers though it is a bit heavier than most but most want speed and it delivers on that count I like it but not as much as Firefox.
