Annoying....I have a desktop icon, 0 bytes, which I can't delete because it says the file it relates to has gone.
How do I get rid of it?
I’ve run CC but it’s still there.

Quite a few different ways you can try....
Click on the icon and then press the F5 key (refresh key)
Reboot machine and try again
Try deleting in safe mode.
The F5 didn't do it.
Deleting in safe mode didn’t, either.

What is the name of the icon? Maybe it is not a shortcut but some sort of special file (like the recycle bin on the desktop that isn't really on the desktop).
Refresh the icon cache?
You say your not techie so it's probably easier to just google those 4 words than try to explain it here.
