The automatic hotfix is because they pushed it out on the studies channel which is enabled by default when you install FF.
It was just the quickest way to get it distributed.
If you have disabled studies in your privacy settings then you won't get the hotfix unless you enable it for a few minutes. You can disable it again afterwards.
TBH it shouldn't be long before they issue a full fix.
I wonder for older systems like XP that have to use an old version of Firefox does the work around eluded to by Winapp2.ini a few posts up work for those systems? Or are those older systems just out of luck?
You should be able to get the official ESR update to fix the problem if you are using the ESR on an older system.
If youre simply using an old version then it's going to depend if that signature setting is in the same place (but there should be an equivalent somewhere in about:config).
PS. I just updated my FF Android from the play store. It's cured the problem but I had to reinstall my extensions. (Didn't have to do that with Windows).
unhappily this function is not available in older ff esr (allow ff to install and run studies...)
@hazelnut
i wanted to skip this esr version and only use the next version because i dont like the ff 60´s or the ff 60.0 - 60.9-esr series as a direct offshoot of ff 60´s
i have only take in the meantime the option with "about:config" - xpinstall.signatures.required set on false and it does its work :-) perhaps it helps me trough the time until ff esr 68 released in 09. july 2019...

Good to know! I'll still be able to use an old last WinXP version of Firefox ESR on my old XP system with that tweak.

@hazelnut
i have opera updated and it seems that the autoupdater ... brings the browser opera itself unaccessable and the "service" is not shutdownable with the taskmanager.
is there a way to deactivating this autoupdater in the options of opera? (i have only found the "rename" thing in the install-folder of opera and the deactivate-option with cceaner)
A further update to ESR is expected today, and they are working on updating older FF versions for those still running them:

Firefox 66.0.5 has been released, and we recommend that people update to that version if they continue to experience problems with extensions being disabled. You’ll get an update notification within 24 hours, or you can initiate an update manually. An update for ESR users will be available tomorrow. We’re also working on a fix for older versions of Firefox, and will update this post and on social media as we have more information.

FVD Speed Dial users are furious after losing access to bookmarks
Now, while Mozilla banning the extension is good, it does pose some difficulties for users who relied on the add-on. Many users have lost access to all the bookmarks they had saved via FVD Speed dial. And now that the add-on has automatically been removed from the browser, and banned from the store, there is literally no way to install it again.
