I am running Windows 7, 64bit, 2.67ghz, 8gb ram, Geforce 265.
Background:
I have a 500gb Maxtor external hard drive. It was working fine until the other day when I accessed it. All my files were there, but when I clicked on a folder, Explorer crashed. Then after that, Explorer would crash any time I clicked on the drive letter. Even programs like Winamp would crash when trying to access a file found on the drive.
I thought maybe the internal USB device on the external drive itself might be the problem, so I cracked the case of the thing, took out the hard drive, and connected it directly to my computer. With it connected, the computer won't get past the windows loading screen. It gives me no errors. BIOS sees the drive, but it won't boot all the way to windows.
I put it back in its case. I downloaded Recuva, and Recuva sees the drive. But when I click Scan, it starts the scanning window, but doesn't get past 0%. "Calculating time left...", and nothing happens no matter how long I wait. Clicking Cancel does nothing. At this point I believe Recuva has crashed.
Any ideas?
Best wishes,
