is it possible to export EVERYTHING, i built new computer and want to move everything from this one to that one
I’ve moved this into the computer help category.
When you say EVERYTHING do you mean everything, including the Operating System?
Moving your data is easy, just copy the files to an external disc, and then from that onto the new machine.
(You could use cloud storage rather than your own external disc, if you trust your files to be secure in the cloud).
With your installed apps you usually install a new one on the new machine.
If it is licenced software then you either:
- Get a new licence so that you are licenced to use it on both machnes.
- Re-regster is using your existing licence as from the old machine.
You will normally have to uninstall it from the old machine, either before or after licencing the new install, you will usually be breaching the terms using the same licence on more than one machine.
You may need to contact the software company support to get the licence ‘freed’ from one machine so that you can use it on another.
There are also softwares avilable that will transfer your apps as well as your data from one PC to another, here’s an example (I have never tried it) others are available:
If you do want to move EVERYTHING - including all the apps and the Operating System - from an existing computer to a different one then nowadays it can be done.
Up until a few years ago it wasn’t possible, but some Imaging softwares can now do it.
At least they claim to be able to; personally I have never tried it.
You need to create a special System Image - note that a normal System Image will not do it because the machines have different hardware in them, it has to be done in a special way.
However you should note that because the two machines do have different hardware then from what I have read results can vary.
Also note that the Windows Activation/Licence can only be used on one machine, (it is associated to the motherboard).
So you will either need to get another licence for the new build, or get Microsoft to swap the licence over leaving the old machine unactivated.
Again the same will normally apply to other licenced software/apps that are installed.
Have a read of this, it’s just the first example that I pulled up, other backup softwares that claim to do this are available:
