This issue can happen due to the following reasons.
- The file is open in another app (for example, a document open in Microsoft Word or an image open in a photo editor)
- The file is a system file or is being used by a Windows service.
- The file is protected by security software or permissions.
- The file is located on a network drive or external storage device that has restricted access.
Please try the following to clear these duplicates files.
Close apps that may be using the files
Before running Duplicate Finder, close any apps that might be using the files you want to delete. This includes:
1. Close all open documents, images, media players, and other applications.
2. Check the System Tray (bottom-right corner of your screen) for apps running in the background and close any that are not needed.
3. Run Duplicate Finder again and try to delete the files.
Restart your computer and try again.
If you are unsure which app is using the files:
1. Save your work and restart your computer.
2. Before opening any other apps, launch CCleaner.
3. Go to Tools and select Duplicate Finder.
4. Run your scan and attempt to delete the duplicate files again.
Delete files in smaller batches
If the error appears when deleting a large number of files at once:
1. Instead of selecting all duplicates, try selecting a smaller group of files to delete.
2. This helps identify which specific files are causing the error.
3. Any files that cannot be deleted may be locked or in use: skip those files and delete the rest.
Manually delete stubborn files
If a file cannot be deleted through Duplicate Finder:
1. In the Duplicate Finder results, click the three dots (⋯) next to the file you want to delete.
2. Select View Details from the menu that appears.
3. Click the file path shown under the Location column to open the file’s location in File Explorer.
4. In File Explorer, right-click the file and select Delete to remove it manually.
5. If the file still cannot be deleted, it is likely still in use by another app or the operating system.
