I have CCleaner free version 7,…Unable to delete duplicate files or move them to recycle bin for windows 11, I’ve tried uninstall and reinstall but still will not work, a message appears stating “Something went wrong…whoops, there was a problem and we could not complete the action.” can someone assist, this is very frustrating.
Hi @mlr32main,
- Download and install the CCleaner Support Tool using the link below: https://download.ccleaner.com/CCleanerSupportTool.exe
- Replicate the issue on your end.
- Run the tool to generate the logs.
- At the end of the process, you’ll receive a 5-digit File ID.
Please share that File ID with me so I can review the logs and investigate further.
I have a similar problem. My File ID is UOLH2.
Thank you for these log files @Ohio49er. This issue is with the development team, who are investigating.
The issue is due to a few files failing because either the files are protected/locked or in use and so the fail error is shown for all files.
At this time, I am not able to give a timeframe for a fix for this issue.
Until a fix is available, we recommend removing the files in smaller batches to identify which are failing.
F.Y.I…….will not let me remove any files..I tries to remove just one file, still would not work..![]()
Just to clarify something here:
Are these duplicates of your own files? eg. your own saved images, documents, etc.
Or are they Windows system files? (Which will often be protected by Windows).
Or are they some other type of file? (Application files, saved games, something like that).
In my case Both
Both of the three then.
I’d suggest not trying to delete the System file and App file duplicates - If/when you do that then your computer and your apps will stop working properly.
As some users have already found to their cost.
Older CCleaner versions let you set an ‘ignore’ for them so that they were never found.
However for some reason those filters have been dropped in CCleaner7.
With older CCleaner versions you had to select duplicate files one-by-one for deletion (and yes we got complaints about, that but it was deliberately like that to stop users being too hasty when deleting duplicates).
With CCleaner7 you can now ‘select all’ for deletion. (and so delete System and App files when you have got a clue what they are or what they do).
In my opinion those two changes make the Duplicate Finder in CCleaner7 a dangerous tool that the unwary (unknowing) user can easily break their machine by running.
Allo, I encounter a same trouble with the Cleaner7 Pro version: The Duplicate files facility does not work properly even after selecting small amount of files and avoiding application files. The research of duplicates seems to run adequately (albeit slowly) but after selecting either to move the selection to corb or to eliminate it, the program runs once more slowly and finally there prompt a message “an error has occured , sorry we could not terminate the operation”. What’ could be the trouble ? Is there any solution in view ? Thanks for your help.
Hi @morineau,
If you’re seeing a “Something went wrong” error when trying to delete duplicates, we have a Help Centre article that covers exactly this:
Error: “Something went wrong” when deleting duplicate files in CCleaner for Windows
This error typically occurs because one or more of the files CCleaner is trying to delete are locked or in use by another application — for example, a document open in Word, a file being used by a Windows service, or a file protected by security software. When CCleaner hits a locked file, the error can then show for all remaining files in that batch, even if some were already deleted successfully.
The article walks through a few ways to resolve it, including closing open apps, restarting before running the scan, or deleting files in smaller batches.
If you have any questions, please message me back.
