When setting up a scheduled task:

Will this task run in the background?

Yes, because it runs it under the SYSTEM user.

If it ran under your user, you would see it 'pop up'.

Does that also mean that the/a user does not have to be logged in?

Correct, because when the task is created the run even if user is not logged on option is set by default.

Of course, the PC has to be on. :)
