A while back at the suggestion of Dennis, I uninstalled Java. However, I just found a few leftover folders. Is it OK to delete the following and all their contents?:
C:\Windows\Java
C:\Windows\Application Data\Sun
I was thinking the C:\Windows\java folder was created by Windows itself, however I don't know if that's correct. Mines empty too. As for C:\Windows\Application Data\Sun if you've removed the Sun Java Runtime Environment it's safe to remove.
I've found that sometimes even empty folders can act the same as shared .dlls or Common Files and removing them could have weird consequences down the road. If you have Vista or 7 with a terabyte-size drive, don't be as unforgiving as when you had a smaller drive with XP. Let the hive grow. Bang your head less.

Well old versions of Windows had a Java folder even before installing back then Sun Java Runtime, which was the reason I didn't know if XP and newer had it by default.

Actually, the guidelines say a lot of things such as "don't leave registry keys, or empty folders".
But 90% of developpers don't care about guidelines on Windows.

It may have been a leftover from the time when Microsoft had their own proprietary Java VM.
