Defraggler stops

Hello,

Just bought the whole Piriform set incl Defraggler. Very disappointing.

Need help, the program is driving me bananas. It fragments the disk, not defragment. Fragmentation is increasing from 4 GB to now 14 GB.

The health of the disk is a yellow WARNING, and there is no manual on what to do about it.

I've run D. 25 times, and within 5 minutes it stops.

Please, help!

//

G'day and welcome,

first up, make sure Stop VSS is ticked, info here; https://forum.piriform.com/index.php?showtopic=35459

what version of Defraggler and Windows are you running?

when DF stops, is it stopping and never moving, just going slow, or does the program stop with an error?

can you provide a snapshot of the disk health stats?

VVS ticked. It wasn't.

Using Win 10 Pro 64-bit.

Defraggler is 2.21.993

Neither of your three stop descriptions. It starts to read yellow boxes and write green boxes. After a minute or two he's done. The drive is full of light and dark red boxes, so process is far from complete. Defrag must be restarted.

He says there are 66 fragmented files 4,3 GB, 169 fragments, 12 % fragmentation.

Health is yellow Warning. I'm trying to get to green Good.

Theres a file list with 74 files, pagefile.sys is one of them.

Under tab "Health" I find the following:

And now it's down to 7 files, 35 fragments, and same fragmentation 12 %

What's happening here?

//

Fragmented files are still 4,3 GB.

I understand less and less how Defraggler works??

post-78773-0-39476900-1491757544_thumb.jpg

And now I have 40 fragmented files 4,4 GB, 156 fragments, and 13 % total fragmentation. 41 files in File list.

OK, I'm not using the program again until I get proper support.

try this, open DF, click the File List tab, click Analyse, click the Size column header, that'll sort the results in ascending order, click it again for descending order.

show a screen shot of those worst offenders.

First of all:

when you say it stops do you mean it finishes defrag with remaining fragments?

Or do you mean defraggler crashes?

There are sometimes files, that can't be defragged (e.g. locked in use by programs).

But my Defraggler never stopped leaving more fragments than before.

So I would recommend you to check your hard drive.

Defraggler may stop because of read/write errors.

At first please check your hardware:

  • HDDs should be firmly mounted

  • cables not kinked and all contacts clean

  • Do everything to minimize vibrations

If you checked the above, you can try the SATA SSC (Spread Spectrum Clocking) jumper setting.

  • This can reduce electromagnetic intefferences

  • Check the data sheet of your harddrive for SSC (Examples)

And of course check your partition with chkdsk or any other program

  • E.g. Windows partition C: cmd > chkdsk C: /f /r

I recommend to get a replacement hard drive. A failure in the near future (weeks or years) is likely.

It can take longer if the errors do not increase after the above mentioned measures.

For everyone: Everytime have a backup of your important data.

(@mta: Just read your signature - so true )

Evaluation

In the 424 days of your Spin-Up time (9) you collect interessting statistics:

You got a few Reallocated Sectors (5). This value is a main indicator for failures in the next months.

Of course Reallocation Events (196) increase too.

All of my HDDs are at or around 0 (Spin-Up times over 300 and 400 days)

Your G-sense Error Rate (191) is very high. You really should avoid these!

This may lead to your high power-off or emergency retracts (192).

Of course Load Cycle Count (193) increase too.

My more stationary laptop count <3200 G-sense Errors (335 online days)

Your Load Cycle Count is high but still okay (most HDDs are designed for >200k).

Bad luck, if you lost in HDD roulett and got sensitive one.

The vibrations may also cause the SATA Downshift Errors / Runtime Bad Blocks (183)

(description depends on your hard drive manufacturer)

Bad cables/contact or electromagnetic inteferences can cause these errors.

Value and Baddest should everytime higher than Limit. For the S.M.A.R.T. Status Good

(space is a confusing delimiter for thousands ^_^)

See S.M.A.R.T. - Wikipedia from 2017-03-19 05:40 for table with descriptions

(I checked this table, with trusted sources in my language)
