Hello, I have a similar problem to Vista users - after running Defraggler, the amount of free space went down quite a lot. The only problem is, it seems my system didn't make a Restore Point or any of that stuff.
I don't know what to do, maybe I wasn't looking at the right place. I tried looking in CCleaner at System Restore - there was nothing, I tried looking in Control Panel - nothing.
Any ideas?
Thanks
Hi XanderCzsite, and welcome to Piriform.
Have a look at the last link in this recent thread post, regarding Volume Shadow Copies ...

These will have been increasing as you defrag.
Hope that helps.
Thanks for the reply.
I tried that but apparently nothing changed. Either the problem is somewhere else or I'm doing something terribly wrong. I might as well just format the whole drive and be done with it...
That's a last resort.
System Restore and Volume Shadow Copy are the prime causes of lost space when defragging in Vista and Win7, but before you go down the format road, it would be worth carrying on trying to find the cause of your lost space because you may be in the same boat next time you defrag.
The lost space isn't particular to Defraggler.
Try running WinDirStat, which will tell you what is taking up every bit of space on your hard drive. You may spot something you weren't aware of.
WinDirStat: Freeware
Come back of course, as there may be suggestions from other members.
Hi,
you have to try 3 to 5 defrags after eachother, normally you should get the free space back then that you had. Not everything is immediatly fragmented with just one run.. make new analises of disk and redo defrag over. 2x, then see if you get some more free space, then you should just defrag few more untill how it was again.
Xander, before you try any of this, be sure you have a complete system backup first.
It may help to turn off the system restore, then switch it back on after they are cleared.
But be aware that this potentially could cause problems if your system has malware/needs a restore point because of some problem, & none are available.
If you are going to format anyway, I would say that this would be the lesser risk to take.
