Defrag all Free Space together to split the Volume

Hello together,

I tried wit several setting, but I don't get all the data blocks together. Seems some blocks used by VSS or other technical Windows files just won't move to the others.

Can some please provide me the correct setting to above just one large area with data blocks and one large area of free space?

I'm using the current version 2.20.989 (64bit) on a Windows10 with an SSD.

You don't defrag an SSD.

Regardless of what appears on the map, the SSD NAND controller will not coalesce the blocks cos it's designed to shuffle the data to prolong drive life.

And on disk drives many system files such as VSS are locked by Windows from defragging.

Hi Markus,

In my opinion, what you are after is the Holy Grail of defragging.

It is almost impossible to achieve.

As you have discovered, a lot of system files are in use, and hence locked, so can't be moved.

You could try turning off System Restore points, and your AV software, and defragging from Safe Mode, but it would be very rare to get one big section of data blocks and one big section of empty blocks.

Plus, overriding all that, you simply get no benefit in defragging a SSD, the way the data is stored in blocks and the way it is accessed and addressed means defragging will have no performance benefit but will have a negative wear and tear side-effect.

Hello MarkusK83 - There is one disk utility I trust to resize, move, or split Windows NTFS partitions without the risk of data loss: MiniTool Partition Wizard.

I suggest downloading/using the bootable CD version in order to work from "outside" the installed OS: http://www.partitionwizard.com/download.html

You can either burn the .iso to CD or DVD, or create a bootable USB flash drive using Rufus: https://rufus.akeo.ie/
