Default Temporary Internet Files location changed

hey folks,

i am using windows 7 (64-bit), ie9 and ccleaner v3.23.1823 (simple overwrite) and my default temporary internet files location at: c:\users\paul\appdata\local\microsoft\windows\temporary internet files changed to c:\users\paul\appdata\local\temp. this has happened a few times in the past after running simple overwrite. when this happens i have to always restore via an earlier system image because when i use the move folder to move it back to c:\users\paul\appdata\local\microsoft\windows\temporary internet files the location changes but when the log off/on procedure completes it goes back to c:\users\paul\appdata\local\temp.

i must stress this doesn't happen everytime but i would like to know how to prevent this in the future, or, failing that, how to resolve it back to its default location so it no longer writes to the c:\users\paul\appdata\local\temp.

thankyou.

it's not just temp files.

if you ever move a windows 7 folder from the start menu to say, the desktop, then windows will continue to think files must be dropped into that folder in the future, even if you move it back, or delete it from the desktop.

i have a hunch that windows also changes a registry key when this happens. though, i may be incorrect.

* someone else may be more knowledgeable about how to fix/prevent this problem. just letting you know it doesn't only apply to temp folders.

before moving a folder it may be worth stopping the service named

"distributed link tracking client"

the purpose of which is described as

"maintains links between ntfs files within a computer or across computers in a network."

i understand that on an organization computer network an administrator may choose to move a resource from one server to another,

and this service on each user's computer will know where that resource is relocated to ready for the next time the user needs it.

i do not see the benefit for a stand-alone computer with one user - but microsoft think we all need it as a default automatic start-up service.

i know that it was essential to disable that service when trying to use acronis for image backups,

other-wise it took just as long with 20 to 40 initialization-error-aborting-restarts as it eventually took to do the job that was needed.

when using xp i permanently disabled that service and never missed it.

i have less experience and confidence with windows 7 so it is normally left running after its automatic start-up,

but if i wish to rename or relocate any files or folders i consider the possibility that big brother billy g. is watching every move,

and i may decide to first disable that service so i can blind-side him..

it is happening again - upper case become lower

only moderators posts seem to survive - this is so unfair

n.b. i am using palemoon, based on the same open source code as firefox.

is it possible that some moderators use a different browser and are immune to this problem ?

what i type includes capital letters,

immediately i preview then all the letters in my edit box drop to lower and the preview region above shows the same.

i am typing from chrome, and also experience it in both chrome and waterfox. seems to be a board issue, and mods are just op.

on topic: would disabling the dltc service break symlinks?

symlinks are similar to but not the same as folder junctions and hard links and reparse points,

plus any other related "smoke and mirrors" tricks that give a false sense of reality.

i have now stopped dltc service and windows explorer can still see my browser cache at

c:\users\alan\appdata\local\moonchild productions\pale moon\profiles\4qbu47br.default\cache\0

even though it really exists at

d:\junctions\palemoon\alan\local\pale moon\profiles\4qbu47br.default\cache\0

courtesy of a folder junction named "pale moon" situated at

c:\users\alan\appdata\local\moonchild productions

which points at the genuine article

d:\junctions\palemoon\alan\local\pale moon\

i suspect that all symlinks and its relatives are hard-coded into the ntfs file system of each partition which uses them,

and i suspect that none of them depend upon dltc - but i do not know.

it would be interesting to observe the effect of running or stopping dltc on the action of inserting an offset to the genuine article, i.e.

d:\junctions\palemoon\alan\local\offset\pale moon\

i expect my browsing experience would instantly go pear-shaped regardless of dltc,

and palemoon would cause a new profile with a new cache chewing up 1 gb per day of c:\ on my ssd.

n.b.

even though palemoon restricts its cache to the limit i selected of 100 mb,

when doing significant (for me) browsing and forum-ing,

the cache still gets up to 1 gb writes per day (and of course 1 gb deletions) which i prefer to relocate onto d:\ on a hdd

(browsing speed is still more than adequate for me).

i use up to 6 tabs,

i do not like to think about the life expectancy of an ssd when one of our super-heroes (you know who you are) is browsing with 100's of tabs open :)
