Deep scan switches drive, is this normal?

hi,

A friend's external hd (G:) is inaccessible so I've installed recuva on her computer. Although we see the drive in disk manager, it says that it has 280 gigs

of free space, as if it was empty. Now assuming that we are looking to recover undeleted files I started a deepscan and checked "Scan for non-deleted files"

in the actions menu. The scan starts but after let say, 30 mins, it switches to scan drive (C:) intead of (G:), being the inaccessible external hard drive.

My question would be to know if I am on the right track and if this switch is normal?

Thank so much for like everyone else here there important info at stake.

regards,

Jf

If Windows doesn't detect a valid partition then it would assume the drive is empty and needs formatting.

Before you carry on with Recuva I would suggest you first try TestDisk as mentioned in this post.

For a start, how are you running Recuva? If you use the Wizard and select all files from anywhere on your pc, Recuva will manfully plough through all of your drives in turn. If you're using Advanced Mode selecting all drives will do the same.

I suggest that you either run the Wizard and select the drive letter in File Location/In a Specific Location, or use Advanced Mode and select the drive to be scanned.

First thank you very much for the fast answers and I apologize for the delay of my reply. Yes we selected the right drive in the actions. Anyways we've lauched a deep scan without looking for undeleted files and it seems to work this way. Hoping that it will still be able to recover the files from the hd.
