I guess it depends on how large is your disk, amongst other things. If it's up in the multiple terabytes then a deep scan will take some time. There are getting on for 250 million clusters to be read in one terabyte.
I can see how an MFT entry can be corrupted and lead to a loop in processing. It's more difficult to see how a sequential scan of the clusters, as a deep scan does - can fail, but who knows? Recuva doesn't seem to have found many files.
It's all guesswork really. If the file count doesn't increase, or you're into days of processing, you might consider chopping the job.
Also it very well be that the defect of the HDD is causing the problem
Thanks for the replies. I am 99% sure that the disk's MFT is corrupted. Does Recuva still work if the MFT is corrupted?
Hi
I'm experiencing the same problem. Currently showing 1940023188%
I'm attempting recovery of a hard drive with a corrupted MFT. Just starting my third attempt - the first attempt was terminated when the PC went into sleep mode over night and the second reached nearly 2 million files found, then crashed. This may have been to do with my anti-virus software as there was a warning message saying that I needed to update it. I have now turned the anti-virus software off, and trying for the third time. Fortunately, I have a stubborn streak!
Would be glad to have some reassurance that I'm not wasting my time from someone who has had the same issue but survived to retrieve files
Thanks
