It surely is welcome to see it happen the other way around, maybe they are discontinuing that trial? Why keep people in the dark ?

EDIT: The one for the upsell button appearance is still ongoing.

I have given up trying to second guess just what the marketers/developers are playing at recently.

(Or at least I've given up sharing my guesses publicly).

I've updated over top of previous versions without the need to block the internet or change the registry (yet), and I still haven't had Custom Clean blocked.

I only run the Health Check scan after an update just to check for new behaviors, and I never actually allow Health Check to clean anything. I ONLY clean with Custom Clean.

After this most recent update, I got a new popup that I've never seen before, and I haven't seen it again either. I noticed this one doesn't mention anything about Advanced/Custom cleaning in the "paid features" list. Anyone else ever see this particular popup? Is it something that's been around a while, & I just haven't noticed it until now?

The "Get Pro" tab popup still shows "Advanced Cleaning" as a paid feature though...

It's not freeware it's Nagware.

There is something more interesting than just that patch release going on. The CCleaner Free v6.25.11093 installed on my second laptop WAS paywalled - now it isn't anymore.

Hi nukecad:

Does the "standard" installed edition of CCleaner Free v6.24 or higher still include the so-called "Emergency Updater" (i.e., CCUpdate.exe plus the scheduled task in Windows Task Scheduler named "CCleaner Update")? According to comments in my 24-Oct-2017 topic New Emergency Updater in CCleaner v5.36 this functionality was added to installed editions of CCleaner after the 2017 fiasco where CCleaner v5.33.6162 was released with a hidden Floxif trojan (see the 18-Sep-2017 BleepingComputer article CCleaner Malware Incident - What You Need to Know and How to Remove ). The Emergency Updater was added to CCleaner v5.36 to allow Avast / Piriform to force an automatic product update (i.e., without the user's consent) if another critical security vulnerability was ever detected in CCleaner, but it is also a backdoor into CCleaner that could be abused by Avast / Piriform to make changes to registry settings, etc. to turn features on and off as they desire.

AFAIK this intrusive Emergency Updater was never added to CCleaner Free Portable. However, I did report a bug in my 21-Jan-2021 topic How Do I Stop CCleaner Portable v5.76 From Automatically Checking for Updates? where the Emergency Updater would be added to my Portable build if I clicked the "Check for Updates" link in the bottom right corner of the user interface and selected "Update Now" in the pop-up (see the old image below I captured in May 2021) instead of manually updating my CCleaner Free Portable by extracting the latest CCleaner64.exe bundled inside the ccsetupxxx.zip file. I don't know if that bug was ever fixed in CCleaner Free Portable (I vaguely recall clicking "Update Now" in a CCleaner Free Portable v6.xx build that simply re-directed me to a download page for the latest standard .exe installer), but I'm not going to test because my Custom Clean currently runs correctly. The last thing I want is to do is accidentally corrupt my CCleaner Free Portable v6.25 files and/or add unwanted registry entries by removing my custom inbound and outbound blocks for CCleaner64.exe from my firewall and trying an online update using "Update Now".

@lmacri Yes the emergency updater, and the task to run it are still installed with each reinstall and I believe with each update if it's not there already.

(I have them both in my Includes for Custom Clean so they don't last long on my machine at all. When the CC Free on my second laptop got paywalled I also added them into my own cleaning batch files).

But even without it there the CC Free changed by itself, twice now on this pay walling alone. It was imposed and then later removed without me doing anything.

AFAIK the emergency updater has only actually been used once, I can't remember just what for. But like yourself I regard it as unecessary security risk to be removed ASAP.

Whatever they're trying, testing, doing, I'm personally done with this program and won't ever trust them again.

I trusted them first to install Crap Cleaner in 2003, then I trusted them again in 2017, after they put the Chinese industrial trojan on my computer because I said that it wasn't (fully) their fault. This time it is, it's all their own, conscious and deliberate decision.

[competition product removed] has been much better for years, anyway, and fully supports Winapp2.ini.

As a reminder, this is an official CCleaner website. Alternative software mentions are not allowed.
