OK, so I bought the Lordoftherings triology disk set a couple of years ago, and I want to put it on my computer so i can watch it without having to cart around all the disks (its a box set). How do I go about getting the disk onto my hard drive? Is there a program that I need to use? How do I physically go about putting the movie from the disk to the hard drive?
Really? It cant be illegal to copy my own dvds for my own personal use if i dont copy them and give them away or anything? I mean I paid just over a hundred dollars for the box set, and just dont want to scratch up the originals as I collect all things Lordoftherings.
It depends on where you live. Actually, in canada you don't have nearly as strict of laws regarding this.(from what I've read anyway)
I don't claim to be a lawyer, and the only info I know on this is what I've read. From what I understand its illegal to remove/circumvent any kind of copy protection. Since dvd movies are encrypted and the only way to put them permannently on your computer is to remove the copy protection, theoretically its illegal.
Personally I think its a joke and they need to re-evaluate these laws.
Anyway, that program I posted works very well and once you have the files on your computer you can do just about anything with them.
Thats interesting. I thought it was just illegal (in the US) to upload your digital media on p2p sites. All I want to do is preserve what I paid for, but still enjoy the videos now and again.

Not to get into some copyright lecture it's basically like audio/music cd's:
We don't own the material, we're only buying a license to use it for our lifetime or the lifetime of the product. I hope auto makers never get that idea, imagine a driving car and never owning it, and all hell would freeze over if more than one person drove it because that would be sharing.

You can also use Alcohol 120%. That's very easy to work with.
Not free.
What I posted will rip the dvd for free and after that you can use a program like dvd shrink or shrinkto5(found on filehippo) to shrink down the file and actually burn a copy. If you use shrinkto5 I would suggest you click the boxes that say "main movie" and "max quality". That will give you very nice results when burned back to dvd.
Of course with the file on your computer you could view it in wmp or whatever else you have on your computer.
