Cleanup Offline Files Folders

Offline folders OFTEN get currupted or take up way to much disk space. Disk space is becoming less of a problem as most new computers come standard with 500gb of storage. However, offline files quickly overtakes a 20gb drive! Yes, we can adjust the amount of space offline files use, however this diskspace never seems to be taken back, even after files on the server have long been deleted!

The following error is OFTEN logged in the application events log

Error 52

I have found the only way to get rid of it is to delete the offline files cache. To do this you must open any folder, then from the menu choose Tools, Folder Options, click on the Offline Files tab, then hold both the ctrl and shift key while pressing the delete button!!! This will clear the cache and you MUST reboot right after you complete this or it won't cleanup properly. Yes, you can turn offline files off then back on but you don't get the same results.

Note: If you are a home user offline files can be turned off altogether. Offline files feature is only used when your computer is on a network and your files are stored on a file server. The offline files feature keeps a hidden emergency copy of all your files locally on your c drive. If for some reason your companies file server is down your computer will automatically pull from the offline files area. Once the file server comes back online your computer will automatically update the files to the area you normally store them on the server.

I don't have offline files on mine, but on computers that do, I know this has to be annoying.

Offline files acts pretty much like an internet cache, only for servers instead of internet browsers.

I agree that this would be nice to clean.

Do you mean offiline files from a mapped drive, then it "dangerous" (for lack better word) to remove them, Win7 doesn't even let an Admin with UAC elevated into that folder without modification of security settings for the folder, just uncheck them from being available ofline.

I for one would be really mad if I ran ccleaner while not on my network and lost all my offline files.

If an individual is not stopped by their net admin they can choose what they want offline

CCleaner would not be capable of accessing the contents of this folder, as Nergal alluded to in his previous post.
