Hey All - Thanks in advance for any answers. I installed CCleaner on my desktop (HP) and now my CD drive won't recognize any discs. I double click on the icon and it just keeps asking to insert a disk (CD) even though one is in. After inserting a CD it still wont recognize it then. I'm wondering if anyone else has had this experience and if anyone here knows if I did this with CCleaner.
hey sschultz,
a few questions:
did this happen only after installing ccleaner?
did it happen after running the cleaner function? (if so did you select any extras or use the default settings)
or did you also run the registry clean? (if you did, did you save a backup, try restoring it)
did you install or run any other apps or cleaners before noticing the cd drive issue.
Hi, sschultz
Having carefully observed and analyzed CCleaner's installation, I believe it is impossible for CCleaner to trigger such an issue. I believe it is just a timing coincedence.
Anyway, why don't you try System Restore? Restore your system to some times before installing CCleaner. If the issue is resolved by doing that, then the problem's source is a software application, service or driver that you've installed or run within that time period. Otherwise, the issue source is hardware. (Don't worry about restoring: It can always be undone.)
Probably just a dead drive that needs replaced! I personally go through a CD/DVD drive every 2 to 3 years which is brought on soley by ripping audio CD's, and burning a horde of discs.
About the only other thing you can do is to uninstall this, then reboot and see if the drive functions again after Windows re-detects and re-installs it automatically on reboot. If Windows re-installing the drive doesn't work it's time for a new drive:
@fireyone -
It did occur after installing CCleaner but days after, isn't used often enough for me to actually say it's anything but coincidence. It also would have been after running cleaner. I use all the options except wiping the freespace on my hard drive. I have not yet done a registry clean. No other programs/apps were installed between the CCleaner installation and the driver not recognizing CDs.
@fleet command -
I didn't think anything should interfere with the optical drive. I've used this program on 5 other computers in the past with no problems. I just wanted to be sure no one else has had this problem so I could 100% rule it out. Have not yet tried system restore, will check it out.
@Andavari-
The drive is only about 8 months old, if even that. I did try updating the driver and nothing happened as result. I have not yet tried uninstalling it. I"ll check that out as well.
Thanks all for the help. I kind of figured CCleaner had nothing to do with it due to past experience but as I said, I was just looking for reassurance that CCleaner had nothing to do with it and it's just a matter of coincidence.
@fireyone, if you have any other thoughts on this I'd be glad to hear what they are. Thanks again.
Almost all computers have their own forum. Dell, Toshiba, Lenovo etc. I would go there and open a thread. A new CD drive should not just stop working like that. You are in all likelihood also entitled to phone support since the drive is so new. And a repair at their expense if it comes to that.
This seems to be HP's support forum: http://h30434.www3.hp.com/psg/
