CD & DVD Drives Not Recognizing disks

Thanks for the forum. This is my first issue with CCleaner. So far an excellent utility...

I ran the current CCleaner for the temp files and registry entries on my gal's PC (WinXP pro SP2). I saved the registry entries. After reboot her PC doesn't 'see' disks in the CD-ROM or DVD drives. The device manager shows the drives are there and the troubleshooter says they're working. But when putting data or music disks in the drives, they show no disk. I've been trying to backup photos in these drives and I keep getting the message "Insert disk into drive "D" and "E". There's an empty Fuji CD-RW in there. What's up? Thanks.

Does it not see any ANY discs, eg if you put a music cd in?

(Also have you rebooted?)

It could be a dead drive if it's just with one CD/DVD drive, and if so that could be a coincidence of it being noticed after running CCleaner.

Then again it could also very easily be a simple line messed up in a registry value which can easily happen when uninstalling some CD/DVD burning software that makes the CD/DVD drives unusable when uninstalled.

If it isn't a dead drive you can try these WinXP instructions (although I don't know what success you'll have):

1. Go into the Control Panel then enter Hardware->Device Manager

2. Right click the DVD/CD-ROM drive listing and choose Uninstall.

3. Reboot Windows, and it will automatically redetect the CD/DVD drive.

Edit:

Also look at this Microsoft article.

Also if you have HP Printer/Scanner Software as in a newer version installed it includes the Sonic PrimoSDK, which can become broken if uninstalling some CD/DVD burning software. Reinstalling the HP Software may fix it.

That is correct. The 'D' drive is read-ony. No matter whether it's music or data, the "please insert a disk into drive 'D' appears when a disk is placed into the drive. Same for drive 'E' which writes data, music or DVD.

In the 'My Computer' files the drives are there. They just don't recognize any disks. This started immediately after running CCleaner last Wednesday. Her WinXP isn't an authorized copy so the MS "Fix It" utility can't help. I've done two system restore passes . Both times the PC restores to an earlier date with no problem. But the drives still don't see any disks. Weird huh?

Thanks!

Yes several times. I'll uninstall the drives and reboot. Thanks!

Since that is the case we can no longer help you I'm afraid.

Good luck fixing the system. Thread closed.
