CCleaner seems to start automatically in Windows 7. How to stop this?

I've looked through the options and see nothing for "Start with Windows startup" or anything similar. Short of disabling it in MSCONFIG which I don't think even worked though I'm not sure because I'm unable to test it right now, isn't there an option somewhere that controls this? I try to run a really lean operation with a minimal number of things running in the background.

I can't edit a previous post? What???

So under Options, Settings, there is an option:

"Run a one-time clean with the Custom Clean tool when you start Windows". Of course that is unchecked.

Smart Cleaning, Automatic Updating?

Both of those run a process in the background, so if you have either one (or both) enabled then Windows will put a CCleaner icon in the system tray to show that a background task is running.

I think you nailed it. Thank you! It was the Automatic Updating. Strange that they would choose to run that in the background. You don't need it updated until you're next using it after all.

If you have it turned on then it checks, I think it's every 12 hours, if there is an update available.

That's all it does but to do that it needs to run as a background task.

And yes I don't see much point in automatic updating either, unless perhaps you run Smart Cleaning and never open CCleaner yourself? But some users asked for it.

Thank you.

I just noticed that the links sent via email for a new reply don't work. Here's the last one:

https://community.ccleaner.com/index.php?app=core&module=system&controller=redirect&url=https://community.ccleaner.com/topic/63610-ccleaner-seems-to-start-automatically-in-windows-7-how-to-stop-this/?do=findComment%26amp;comment=338890&key=f0afa60e368bf8dfa979625bdda820142dd3cf2cd7c75d4ab01fbdbff908c472&email=1&type=notification_new_comment

Copy and paste that into your browser and you'll get:

Sorry!

We could not find that topic.

Thanks for reporting that.

The reply notifications are not something that I normally have enabled.

I do have other email notifications enabled and the links in those are working OK.

The syntax in that link looks correct, so I'm not sure why it isn't working?

I'll turn the reply notification emails on here for a day to collect some and do a bit more testing.

That link I posted is now working. Must be my wonky Firefox browser. :)

Unlikely to be your browser as that particular link wouldn't connect for me either. It does now.

Invision, who develop/maintain the software that this forum runs on, have been logged in fr the past few days and again today.

They are probably updating or modifying the underlying software, so a few temporary glitches might be expected as they do that.

That makes sense. Thanks.

Do you know if there's any way of getting CCleaner to shut down totally when I close it after scanning? It seems to leave itself running in the background after I scan and close it.

It depends just what is running in the background, which can depend on your ccleaner settings.

Smart Cleaning and Automatic updating run a background task that Windows puts an icon in the system tray for.

The newish Performance Optimser runs one that doesn't get an icon.

The 'emergency updater' that was introduced after the 2017 hack runs one IIRC, but I disable/delete that anyway.

I'm not sure if the Driver Updater starts one if you use it?
