CCleaner isn't cleaning Google Chrome

I downloaded the latest version of CCleaner & now CCleaner won't clean Google Chrome nor Firefox. It only cleans Internet Explorer, which I don't use. I have no idea what needs to b done to have these browsers cleaned by CCleaner. I feel really lost as CCleaner cleans better than any other tool/program/app that I know of. I have never had any problems with CCleaner before. You all get top ratings in my book. Thanks for any help you can give me with this problem Sincerely zawjo

Yup...same here, but I am running Chrome, Version 8.0.522.237

Guys -- please read the entire thread I started in the CCleaner Discussion section, "New CCleaner ignoring Google Chrome". The more info you can provide just may help the CCleaner experts sort this out.

Read thread before I started this one.Tried the Task Manager to shut down occurances of Chrome=there are no occurances of chrome in task manager.

I am using Vista Home Premium 32-bit OS(would not recommend it, ME was better than Vista).

AMD Turion Dual-Core RM-72 2.10GHz with 3GB RAM.

Avast 5.1.889

Chrome 8.0.552.237 & Firefox (never open IE browser so not sure what version it is on)

I will try uninstall new CCleaner & install previous version to see what happens & report results.(If I can get signed back into Piriform, ugh email not recognized as valid, but piriform sent 2 emails to me. go figure)

Could some of the Chrome junk be showing up in Windows Explorer-Thumbnail Cache?? When I use Chrome to game,I have noticed that the WE-Thumbnail Cache KB found is higher than I ever noticed in previous version of CCleaner. I still have to clean Chrome using Chrome tools even after running CCleaner. guess I need to do a bit more research to determine if Chrome cleans quicker after running CCleaner or not.

I did get a pop up asking Chrome to be closed when I had the browser opened, Not sure if pop up is consistent cuz I know the browser needs to be closed to run cleaner, but still didn't clean Chrome.

Did a test over the weekend. Reformatted Win7, put in all windows updates, Google Chrome and new version of CCleaner. Google Chrome shows up under CCleaner applications but no files appear after running analyze and GC is not being cleaned. Uninstalled new CCleaner, put previous version back in, GC is cleaned. This is the same situation as reported last week. I'm out of ideas and will wait for the next version of CCleaner to see if it recognizes Google Chrome on my sytem.

AMD Athlon II X2 2.70 GHz

Win 7 X64 Home Premium

4GB RAM

I am having the same problem as those above. GC is not being cleaned as in the previous version. I do not use IE. I will revert to the previous verstion of CCleaner so that GC will be cleaned. I have a dinosaur of a computer, Win XP 2000, but have been satisfied with how things are running so far. That seems to be the only problem that I am having, otherwise, I am satisfied with how everything works.

Can someone post the location of the profile folder that is not being cleaned?

For example in W7:

C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\User Data\Default

Thanks

MrT -- I will post the location of the profile folder when I get home from work in about 8-9 hours. If it helps, I am using

W7.

MrT -- With my W7 X64 system, Google Chrome is in the proper location:

C:\Users\Dave\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\User Data\Default

The chrome.exe (no occurances running in task manager-browser is closed) is also in proper location:

C:\Users\Dave\AppData\Local|Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe

We haven't been able to reproduce this issue.

Can you please let us know specifically what is not being cleaned?

Can you let us know if you have any path being excluded in the Exclude screen?

Thanks

MrT -- with CCleaner 3.03.1366, Google Chrome shows up under CCleaner applications and I have all the boxes checked. When you run CCleaner to analyze (before actually running CCleaner to clean), not a single Google Chrome file shows up and when I run CClener to clean, nothing in Google Chrome is cleaned. It's as if Google Chrome isn't on my computer, or, CCleaner is ignoring Google Chrome.

If I uninstall this newest version of CCleaner and reinstall the previous one, CCleaner version 3.02.1343 does show Google Chrome files after running analyze and this previous version of CCleaner does clean Google Chrome.

I haven't changed any programs in my computer between these two versions of CCleaner. The only change is the addition of some Windows Updates.

I appreciate your help. I have no problem staying with CCleaner version 3.02.1343 if that's what I have to do.

Thank you for your help. Unfortunately we haven't been able to reproduce this problem. We will continue working on that.

Is there anybody else experiencing problems with Firefox cleaning or this is just happening with Chrome?

Thanks

I strongly suggest to Flaboy and anyone else who wants this fixing to implement a very simple test.

Download PORTABLE versions of both the latest "non-working" and the previous "working" versions of CC;

Ensure you have some Chrome temp that needs removing, and that no part of Chrome is now running;

Unzip the two CC versions into two different folders;

Launch them both BUT DO NOT RUN NOR EVEN ANALYZE YET;

Now analyze with the "non-working" version and confirm that it cannot see any Chrome junk;

Now "Run Cleaner" with the "non-working" version so it removes all that it found upon analyze;

NOW ANALYZE with the "working" version and that will (hopefully) stipulate all the Chrome Junk the latest version ignores;

Now double click to see the detailed results;

Now select the results and right click and choose "Save to Text".

You now have a text file to attach with your next reply,

and this may detail exactly what the old "working" version can see but the latest "non-working" version ignores.

Alan_B -- thanks for the suggestion. Will do this when I get home from work in 3-4 hours.

Same issues with Chrome only!

Okay -- per Alan_B's suggestion, I downloaded the portable versions of CCleaner 3.02.1343 (the one which recognizes and cleans Google Chrome) and CCleaner 3.03.1366 (the one which ignores Google Chrome). They are in entirely different locations on my computer. I then did some web surfing with IE8 and Google Chrome.

Attachment log1 shows CCleaner 3.02.1343 after running analyze. You can plainly see it recognizes Google Chrome (and it does clean the browser).

Attachment log2 shows CCleaner 3.03.1366 after running analyze. It clearly shows NOT A SINGLE Google Chrome file. Everything else is the EXACT same.

I sure hope someone can figure this out.

log2.txt

I sure hope someone can figure this out.

You did good.

The results show the exactly what and where needs cleaning.

I have neither W7 nor Chrome so am not qualified to comment,

but I am surprised that all these files have no extensions.

Hello again. I have discovered the reason why the new version of CCleaner 3.03.1366 totally ignores Google Chrome on my W7 X64 computer.

In Google Chrome options, under the hood, content settings -- if the box next to "clear cookies and other site data when I close my browser" is checked,

CCleaner 3.03.1366 WILL NOT SHOW any Google Chrome files after running analyze and it won't clean the browser. If this box is unchecked, the new version of CCleaner

WILL SHOW all Google Chrome files after analyze and the browser will be cleaned.

Unfortunately, having the box checked does not clear Google Chrome's history when you close the browser -- CCleaner is needed for that. But, as I discovered on my computer, if the box is checked, CCleaner 3.03.1366 doesn't show any Google Chrome files at all.

This behavior does not exist in the previous version of CCleaner. With version 3.02.1343, even if this box is checked, CCleaner will show Google Chrome files and clean the browser. (see attachments I posted earlier in this thread).

The work-around for me is to simply leave this option unchecked in Google Chrome, as long as I'm using the new version of CCleaner. I hope this helps those of you who have a similar problem.

My sincere thanks to MrT, Alan_B and everyone else.

Just one final question -- is this actually a bug in 3.03.1366 since version 3.02.1343 did show Google Chrome files even with this option box checked?

Hello Flaboy,

MANY THANKS for your persistent research and solution.

My thanks to all the others who were involved in this detective work.

This solution worked for me as well. What a relief.

(GChrome v. 9.0.597.84, CCleaner v. 3.03.1366).

When I ran CCleaner I found 356 MB of data in the Cache of GC & 24MB in GC Net History. It had really piled up there in just a few days. (Note: GC seems to be really bad about caching stuff.)

I'll elaborate slightly on your pathway to making the change.

Tools(GC) > Options > UnderTheHood > Content > Content Settings > Cookies > Uncheck box that says "Clear cookies and other site data...".

I have a feeling that something was changed in Chrome that prevents CCleaner from accessing the temp files to clean them when the "Clear Cookies..." box is checked in Chrome. I don't think the clearing is very effective when the box is checked.

Also, I'll add a strong endorsement for Piriform Speccy. It's a wonderful utility for finding all the "intimate" details of your system without the headache of searching all over for the info.

Cheers, Ed

Thanks everyone for helping specially Flaboy who nailed the problem. We are sorry for any inconvenience this issue has caused.

There is a fix scheduled for the next release.

For the moment, please avoid deleting the "cookies" SQLite file from the "..\UserData\Default" directory. This is what "Clear cookies and other site data..." is actually doing when you close Google Chrome.

Thanks
