CCleaner hung cleaning wastebasket?

I have been using ccleaner for a couple of years with no problems on my windows XP SP3 PC. Today I ran it and it hung while cleaning the wastebasket. After about 10 minutes I killed off the process and then started getting errors with IE so I rebooted. The reboot seems to get stuck for about 5 mins before the display of the login page, but eventually seems to complete ok. When I try to login, the wallpaper is displayed but then nothing else... I can boot the PC in safe mode and everything seems to work ok, including ccleaner!

Dont know whether this is a ccleaner error or ccleaner was just the first to find the error.

The event log shows the errors as ccleaner"application hang" at the time I first had problems. "Sidebyside" errors occur about the time I login (but not in safe mode). The SidebySide error may be a red herring as they have accured many times of the last few months, but I have not had problems logging in before ...

Anyone got any ideas?

Hi woodyman, and welcome to Piriform.

Have you tried doing a System Restore to a date before this happened?

If necessary, you can do this in safe mode, or while in Safe Mode you could try "Last Known Good Configuration".

How to do a "System Restore In Safe Mode" if you can't access it normally.

System restore is my next step, however I came to the forum to find out if this has happened to anyone before. If I do a system restore without finding out what caused the problem, it could well happen again.

I thought I'd cover the booting problem first as I wasn't too sure from your post how serious a problem that was.

Sticking on the Recycle Bin could be a few things.

Is there a particularly large file in the Recycle Bin, or simply a file which won't delete, and have you tried emptying the Recycle Bin manually?

Do you have a multiple pass secure delete configured for the Recycle Bin?

Have you tried either running CCleaner, or emptying the Recycle Bin in Safe Mode.

You may have a corrupt "Recycler" if you can't empty it manually. If so have a read here:

It has happened before, and usually for the reasons above, although there was recently a similar problem caused by IE8, and you mention IE above.

If you have IE8, read the whole thread here:

Post back of course if none of these fix the problem.

I have fixed the problem, although not solved it.

I booted the PC in safe mode and noted the name of the driver that appeared on the screen when the boot stopped. I googled the drive name with "login hung" and a large number of very similar problem problems appeared all on XP. The majority of these were fixed by starting the restore console and using the fixboot command. As I did not have an up to date restore console available, I restored the system to the day before the problem. Problem fixed. I am expecting the problem to occur again when the MS updates are re-applied, but at least this time I will have an up to date restore console to fix the problem.

Thanks for your assistance.
