When a cleaning is completed it appears Ccleaner connects to SOME server and transmits SOME data to SOMEWHERE. If I disable my internet connection before 'cleaning', the second I re-enable it, it appears that Ccleaner connects to SOME server and transmits SOME data SOMEWHERE. Is this accurate? If so, where, what and why? It appears a record of my actions are transmitted to some database somewhere and I'd like proof I'm just being paranoid.
Can anyone provide that proof?
Does Piriform collect background info from Ccleaner actions?
The only reason CCleaner ever connects to the internet is to check for updates. See if you have the "Automatically check for updates" option box checked in "Options\Settings".
Also, where did you download CCleaner from? Just making sure you have a legitimate copy as there are one or two "clones" out there.
Recommended download locations ... File Hippo and Piriform.
Have you positively identified CCleaner.exe as sending this information ?
If you close CCleaner does its process continue to run and send data when the Internet is subsequently connected ?
If you have simply observed Internet Traffic after using CCleaner another possibility to consider is that the removed "Junk" included a portion of malware,
and the malware left behind then phoned home and got a replacement update ! !
Perhaps you should look at the IP addresses that are being connected to.
ccleaner makes no calls after cleaning (it as dennis stated can be set to make a quick call at loadup to see if there is a new version) i've gone over it with wireshark
are you cleaning DNS Cache? maybe your PC is finding a new set of addresses?
1st of all, I only download and install from Piriform for myself or when I help others obtain Ccleaner.
2nd, No, I do not have auto updates checked.
3rd, Traffic only occurs while Ccleaner is running and ceases when I shut it down - close it., and after a few seconds, IE8 naturally talks to Microsoft or where-ever then goes quiet.
4th, no malware has been detected for several months, more than 2 years as a matter of fact. Norton is set on all manual so shouldn't be connecting but NO I have NOT proven without doubt that Ccleaner is the app talking but the connection lights up only upon completion of the cleaning and stops within a few seconds.
I appreciate all your helps and suggestions and I think I can accept what you've posted and take my chill-pill and shut up now.
I'd rather you not accept what we said and take a "chill-pill" but instead acted on the advice given and tried to track down the cause (and destination) of the call home. This would not only aid you, and not only calm my paranoia, but will help "generations" of future CCleaner users (or users of a PC) who may encounter similar issues.
I just ran CCleaner 3.11 and watched my internet connection using TCPView from Sysinternals. No connections were made at any time during the cleaning process. Like Nergal said, it would be good to find out what is calling out. Just saying.
TCPview is pretty good also, although currports is more complete. TCPView will allow you to copy its results to a text file to check later if you wish. (File > Save As...)
The reason I brought up the antivirus with "in the cloud / cloud-based scanning" is because some antivirus' will scan what CCleaner is deleting - I know this because of a false positive once produced while CCleaner was deleting the contents from the Temp folder. Obviously not CCleaner's fault.
