What is your operating system?
If it is vista or Win 7 are you in an administrator account when you try to merge?

thanks for your reply no it's an old computer with xp, my account is an administrator account
Hi sophie,
Since Hazel established that you're running as an administrator, you could try importing the .reg file.
Before editing the registry in any way, I highly recommend the backup program Erunt.
To import a .reg file...Start > run > regedit > file > import > browse to .reg file and highlight it then select open.
This should merge the file, if not you may have a file association problem.
You can find the fix here. Download the REG file association fix.

How would it work if you tried merging it in safe mode?
There may be a security app blocking the import, or possibly even some fake security app.
Try rebooting your PC, then hit f8 key about once per second while it is booting up, till you get to a safe mode options screen.
Select a safe boot option, such as with networking.
Try to merge again, this time in Safe Mode, & see it it will work.
Let us know if this works & report back.

You really are very late with proposed suggestions in many topics. Please read the post dates!
I see others that posted a few days before I did.
Is a few days really that bad?
restarting in safe mode allowed me to merge all backed up registry files.
