CCleaner Analyzing Windows

As a newbie to to CCleaner I do have a question about how long I should expect the application to analyze my 40 Gig drive. After selecting the window and analyze I see the green bar at the top but it has now been almost 2 hours and its still processing. I am using XP SP2.

I finally stopped the application from running and received this data.

ANALYSIS CANCELLED - (8239.867 secs)

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This analysis is incomplete

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

6,297.1MB to be removed. (Approximate size)

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Details of files to be deleted (Note: No files have been deleted yet)

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

IE Temporary Internet Files (165453 files) 6,297.1MB

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

6 GB of browser cache ("Temporary Internet Files") would take forever by itself, let alone whatever else junk files are clogging up your hard disk.

Even if you were to use Internet Explorer's own built-in Temporary Internet Files cleaners (available by right clicking the Internet Explorer icon on the desktop) it would still take almost forever to delete that much browsing history.

I'd say clean the browser Temporary Internet Files either with CCleaner, or Internet Explorer itself - it will take a long time! Then adjust a set limit of say no more than 200 MB for Temporary Internet Files (perhaps 40 MB is more sane).

Thanks so much for your reply. I did delete the cache prior to running CClean and you are correct it still took over 2 hours after restarting the application. I already see an improvement in my systems performance just from regisitry fix.

Thanks again for the reply.

I suggest CCleaner clean up under "WINDOWS\Prefetch" directory pf files.

Cleaning the prefetch folder is pointless and will not improve performance or gain back any significant amout of disk space.

Since so much was removed it may also be wise to defragment your hard disk. Since that too can take a long time if you haven't done it in a while it may be wise to do it while you sleep, or while you're gone for the day or night at work.
