It won't get past 4% before I run out of disk space. How can I prevent it from making this file? Thanks for anything anyone can tell me.
That's what it's supposed to do. Wiping is not really the correct term, but everyone uses it, so we have to live with it. 'Wiping' is done by creating a file, or files, to overwrite all the spare space on the device, and then when the device is full deleting them. It's scary but you and your disk should survive.

Thanks for your reply. If I'm understanding you right, I can let it keep going and it will work as intended?
By the way, I'm only trying to wipe the free space, if that makes a difference.
I just checked it, it does seem to be continuing. Thank you!
Sometimes Windows will automatically throw up the error, however as detailed it can be ignored.
