I've been scanning over and over for a couple of weeks now, with varying and confusing results, but my immediate (and last) challenge is getting the My Documents folder back. I had sent it and my pictures to an external 1TB drive. They were on XP and I switched to 7. I have followed Frank's directions, in support, from the start. Scanning for photos finally worked after several tries (I don't even know why it finally worked!)
I did a scan with no format on the H drive, then a deep scan after doing a quick format and got pictures instead of docs.
Current result of the same operation produced 32,000 files, none of which are .doc. I get jpg, gif, png, cab, and some others, but no doc. All of these are odd images apparently embedded in the system, some graphics figures, others a word or two, and even some pictures that are personal snapshots, but not mine.Never saw them before.
Desperate to get my docs back, but running out of patience.
BTW: I must add that used a program called HD Clone I got from a tech repair shop to copy my C drive to the external before switching to 7. It's significant because the guy said i must have done a 'copy' as opposed to an 'image'. So maybe my stuff is gone for good, but I have to try again.
I have not written anything to that H drive since the copy.
BTW: I found the pictures by accident in a folder labelled 'unknown'. When I do the recover step, I have no idea how Recuva indicates where the files are or the names.
Whew! Simply put, what can i do to get the documents back?
