I have used CCleaner for quite some time now, and have been very happy, until today. I ran it as usual, and saved the backup reg files. After restarting windows, I found some errors, including my passwords for Outlook were gone, and it would not save them when they were re-entered. Also, in Internet Explorer 8, it now tells me that my search preferences have been changed, and prompts me to reset them. Everytime I open IE. Tried to restore the 2 reg backup files, but I get the error, Error importing, cannot access the registry. Any help and suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Probably nothing to do with CCleaner.
You are probably blocked by something.
Perhaps you are working at User level without adequate privileges.
Perhaps I.E.8 is configured to allow almost nothing.
(I remember when conficker came along, Microsoft could not stop it,
and their initial advice was to delve into tricky security settings within I.E. to minimize risk,
and this especially applied to people who never use I.E. knowingly,
it is just that I.E. is part of the bloat baggage that comes with Windows.)
Do not meddle with Regedit unless you are aware of the dangers.
If you are up for the danger you could export a registry key, and then import it back.
If that is successful, then you can try importing your backup files.
Post again if you are not prepared to take the risk, and other possibilities may be suggested.

I had a similar problem. Then I followed the instructions at point 2 at http://docs.piriform.com/ccleaner/troubles...ve-run-ccleaner. But I still received the answer "cannot access the registry".
Then I followed the instruction of Alan:

I exported the registry with Regedit; and then I imported the same file again (with Regedit as well). I received the message, that some parts of the registry, which were used by other programs, are not imported.
Since that my MS Windows XP works very unstable. After sleep mode I got only a blue desktop - without any icons and without opportunity to do anything. As well there are problems with restarting the computer: sometimes it works; sometimes not.
My apologies.
When I said "and other possibilities may be suggested" I failed to conclude "by resident experts".
So far I have had 3 or 4 different problems with Registry permissions,
and each time I have ensured an up to date backup of the entire registry with ERUNT,
and then (nervously) experimented with either RegEdit or Registrar Registry Manager and won the battle.
I am happy that I can recover from any mistake I make on my machine,
but have no such certainty about advising others, so will leave this for those with more experience.
Regards
Alan
