BIG PROBLEMS. URGENT, HELP FOR A NEW USER

Hi everyone

CCleaner was recommended to me by a friend. I stupidly used it blindly in desperation to try and clean up the junk on my computer which is slowing it down. Since I did this 3 days ago, my computer operating system is a disater. I have no sound on the computer and appears that there is now no sound device being detected.

I am unable to restore my computer anymore because when I try and restore it ,it doesn't allow me to go back more than 3 days ago, so I can't even restore it back to its previous state 1 weeks ago.

If I try and log onto an internet banking site, it isn't allowing me to open up the login window( bottom of screen says pop up window is blocked)

I really ,really need to try and see if I am able to restore my computer back to its state 1 week a go and would appreciate anyones help in letting me know if I can do this somehow.

Desperately needing help

Sandy

welcome to the forums sandy :D

well if you cant restore, we're gonna have to just try and fix the problems.

you can start by trying this, how to fix your sound TUT.

the popup would be a toolbar such as yahoo or could even be IE.

try holding down "control" and then click on the link :)

Sandy, I would also seriously consider posting a HiJackThis log as your problems may also be due to a virus or maware, especially as you mention problems accessing your banking site.

Instructions on how to do this are here

http://forum.ccleaner.com/index.php?showtopic=1720

Then open a new topic in the hijackthis log section of the forum and paste your log there with any info and symtoms you have.

Um, the pop up blocker is just blocking the login popup isn't it? Haven't used IE for a long time now but can you left or right click on where it says a popup has been blocked and allow popups for that site. Did you install the Yahoo Toolbar with CCleaner, this would explain why that has suddenly started happening. Click Start, go to control panel, click on 'Add/Remove programs, find the Yahoo toolbar in the list and uninstall it :)

It sounds like theres a couple of problems going on with the other issues, probably not CCleaners fault though (we'll still provide as much help as possible though, and post a HJT log as Hazel suggested)

I was told that my computer is running slower now than it was before I used this program also. And the other week I put it on my sister computer and well everyone is now mad at me because they say everything is slower on her computer now as well.

Does anyone know what could have caused this and how to fix it?

I told them it could have been a windows auto-update but really I have no idea and was trying to save my um butt.

I know I fixed about 400 issues with my system the first time I ran it and 200-300 on hers.

Was I not supposed to fix somethings? And is there any way to reverse these fixes?

welcome to the forums tabbs :D

i dont think it was the issues scanner but instead the cleaner itself.

theres a few options that clear out history and such.

so now, when they visit a regularly viewed webpage, it may take a little longer to load but only that one time because it must re-download all the images.

give it a couple weeks then find out if its still running slow.

if so, could you be more specific as to what is running slow?

thanks :)

EVERYBODY HAIL CAPS LOCK!

Well, I've tried all of the stated instructions and still no sound. Does anyone have any further suggestions

Sandy

I'm sorry I wasn't clear on whats running slow. When I go to burn a dvd or music it burns alot slower now after using the cleaner. I use Nero Burn and Shrink DVD (I think those are the names). So I'm not sure how to fix it - and thought I would just post here to see what the experts think.

Also thank you for the welcome :)

i highly doubt this was Ccleaner unless it reset the burn speed or something.

check nero and shrinks options to see what the burn speed is on.

i like to leave it around 2X but some people put it up to 48X.

doing this may cause the disc to jump while being played.

My burn speed is currently at 40x but my read speed is only at 4x is there a way to speed that up? That seems like such a low number but maybe its correct? I'm not sure why it's running slow, it just happend the same time I put ccleaner on so naturally I think its this program. I did run spybot but nothing came up there. I just really wish I knew.

theres something we can try, go to "my documents" where the ccleaner backups are usually stored, right click it, click merge.

that should fix the issues, if it doesnt its safe to say it wasnt Ccleaner.

I too, have had similar problems since installing CCleaner. I too, cannot go back more than 1 day on restore. All my old restores are gone!! My entire system is running slower. I feel certain that since other have reported some of these issues it is in fact CCleaner that is causing these problems. I read and followed the guide and found NO cautions in this area. Please help us to find out what is causing this. Loosing old restore points is really a concern. I want to have faith in CCleaner, but am a little worried about it.

It did find 100's of "crap" files and freed up almost a gig of space. It seems to me this should make my system run faster, NOT slower.

Help!!!!

There is only one option in CCleaner that could theoretically slow down a Windows installation: the cleaning of the old Prefetch data (under Advanced). Uncheck it if you think it slows down your system.
