I just got home for my winter break, and I brought my External drive with me-- one problem - I forgot my power adapter.
I can't find anything about the drive on the website, so can I just use any old power adapter with a 2.0A output?
Usually not. The issue with power adaptors is most are designed to work just for the device
What's the drive I can see if I can scrounge around and see if I can find anything
The internet has been woefully unhelpful when it comes to finding the specs for the adapter. Everything just says AC Power. I found a replacement for the cord.......... which would be great if I lived in England !

Winapp, although Nergal may be right, here is how you can avoid future headaches like this.
Leave that drive home, & get one of the USB 3 drives that use a laptop HDD (2.5 in disk instead of 3.5).
They are smaller, so they require less power.
All you need to run them are the USB 3 cable. It also works with USB 2 slots. The USB slot give it the power it needs + acts as data transmission.
Larger 3.5 in disks require too much power.
Yeah, but I've had this drive since 1.5TB was pretty much the most you could get without breaking bank & it's about full! As much as I would like a few more (huge) hard drives, the flooding going on now is making their prices rise
I'm not sure what a "breaking the bank" fee would be for you. But I was about to secure a nice 1 TB / 2.5 in / USB 3 device for about $119 at a local Best Buy not many months back.
I thought it was a pretty good deal.
Walmart has 500 GB ones for around $79, I believe.

True... Not a need. But it also works backwards compatible with any system with at least USB 2.
And it is much smaller than the 3.5 in towers that have to also have an AC Adapter. I said tower, because after using a 2.5, the 3.5 feel that big.
Mine runs fine. Single USB cable to my USB 2 connection. Much smaller & simpler.
Yes, my next external will probably be USB powered. There's time for that yet, though.

I'm amazed that so many new pcs this season lack USB 3 and wifi.
A USB Powered drive is a bit of a gamble.
I was unable to find how much power they would demand,
and Acer could not tell me how much power my Laptop could supply.
I was lucky - what I ordered from the Internet worked for me,
probably because it knew I had kept the packaging ready to return for an instant refund
@Kroozer, you are right. They have long needed that, & I am puzzled as well that these options are not already included.
USB 3 has been out a while, & it just seems that they should already have it on newer systems.
WiFi, I believe, they just relegate to laptops & similar, but don't they realize that desktop machines need to connect to WiFi too?
@Alan, it really isn't much of a gamble. USB powered drives use the smaller 2.5 in laptop drives that draw less power. As long as you have USB 2 or higher, it should work. I have had mine a while, & it works great!
For me it was a gamble.
There were 2.5" external Laptop drives advertised that ADMITTED a single USB Port delivered enough power from a Desktop,
but a Laptop had a more puny output and they might need a "adapter" to also draw power from a second USB Port.
I needed
1 port for a USB connected broadband modem
1 port for a proper keyboard with keys in the familiar layout
1 port for a proper mouse with click buttons by my finger, not my thumb.
1 port remained for anything else - certainly not two ports for the hungry power demands on an external drive.
ACTUALLY my memory is defective.
I cannot remember if it did work from one Laptop Port.
Sat on my desk is the Mains Powered USB HUB which eventually met all my needs,
and I cannot remember whether it was that 2.5" drive or something else that drove me to by the external hub.
somehow, I feel that a 7 dollar power supply might be a better move for winapp2 than a whole new drive & USB system, just cause he ain't got an easily replaceable part. Just sayin y'all reality strikes us all :-P
i went and purchased that power cord, Nergal. It arrived the other day, but I've yet to try it out. Will let you know if it works (or if it sets my drive on fire! )
