pwillener
http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html Click on Choose a different version if you are not on Windows XP, or for a non-US-English version. Adobe Reader 8.0 installed smootly, and cleanly uninstalled my existing 7.0.8 version. It is recommended to uninstall earlier versions before installing v8. I have read of difficulties installing v8 on Vista; check the Adobe Reader forum before attempting to install on Vista.
Moderators rridgely Posted December 6, 2006 Moderators Share Posted December 6, 2006 Is it faster then the older verisons? If not I'm sticking with foxit.

res45
Silly question, but whats the difference between Adobe reader and Adobe acrobat? Cheers. Reader allow you to read PDF files. The PDF/Portable Document File is created using Adobe Acrobat in most cases. OpenOffice also has a PDF creation tool although limited. However Adobes Acrobat is a program strictly to just create PDF files with control over ever part of the document such as photos, fonts, color separation management, etc. We use PDF files quiet extensively in our printing company to do proofing and to import/export files in and out of desktop programs like PhotoShop and Quark as well as overseas FTP uploads and downloads. If you don't have a need to save document like in word or copy web pages as PDF files, then just download either Adobe acrobat reader or Foxit reader one. I just put acrobat reader 8 on my wifes computer its faster than 7 works fine.
Moderators Andavari Posted December 6, 2006 Moderators Share Posted December 6, 2006 Incredibly, I find it a lot faster than any previous version. I also really like the new user interface. 27+ MB just for the download alone, when Foxit Reader with additional plugins installed is only 7.04 MB on my system. I'm not especially in any mood to install it anytime soon, but to each their own.

lokoike
I use Foxit, but I installed AR 8 just to see if it was any good. I do like the interface much better than the AR 7 series, but like Andavari said, a pretty interface just isn't worth the massive size. Add / Remove Programs shows it taking up about 117 MBs; that is utterly appalling. I can't see a PDF creating and editing app reasonably hogging up that much space, much less simply a program for only viewing them! Not to mention, even though AR 8 is faster than previous AR version, it is still a bit slower than Foxit, at least on my PC. I don't see AR 8 offering any benefits, other than a prettier interface (which Foxit's interface is still very attractive IMO) and more control over preferences (that I never use anyway). Looks like Adobe still doesn't have me sold. Save a tree, eat a beaver. Save a tree, wipe with an owl. Every time a bell rings, a thread gets hijacked! ding, ding! Give Andavari lots of money and maybe even consider getting K a DVD-RW drive. If it's not Scottish, IT'S CRAP!!!
Moderators Andavari Posted December 6, 2006 Moderators Share Posted December 6, 2006 Add / Remove Programs shows it taking up about 117 MBs; that is utterly appalling. Yeah that's rather large. Even if it were the pro version that allowed the creation of PDF files that would still be too large in my opinion.
pwillener
So in layman's term's can i delete the Acrobat Professional installer.Or do i need it for the reader and writer to work? Though i have noticed that Acrobat Professional Installer is not in add/remove programs, unlike Abode reader & Adobe Acrobat. I'm i making sense? Having different versions of Adobe Acrobat (e.g. v6) and Adobe Reader (e.g. v8) on the same system can create difficulties. So I suggest that you uninstall Adobe Acrobat (from Add/Remove Programs) once the uninstall is successful (you may need to reboot), you can delete the Acrobat Professional installer install the latest (and greatest) version of Adobe Reader [edit] this recommendation because you mentioned that you don't use Adobe Acrobat. If you do use it, of course don't uninstall it. In this case you may also need to keep the installer, in order to uninstall the software. You do not need either of these to install or use Adobe Reader.

MajoMo
Recently was updated to version 1.36 the application "Adobe Reader SpeedUp". In this latest version was added auto-detection for version 8.0 of Adobe Reader/Acrobat. So, we have the opportunity of disabling the majority of plugins that are completely useless for most users. And Adobe to move fast.
jamjar
Hi I'd like to upgrade my version of Adobe Reader but need some advice. When I click on Start>All Programs>Adobe Companion Pack for Vaio, the menu shows: Acrobat Elements 6.0 Photoshop Album 2.0 Starter Edition Photoshop Elements 2.0 Premiere 6LE Reader 6.0 When I go to Add/Remove Programs all those programs are shown except Reader 6.0. In Program Files, there's a folder for Acrobat which has sub-folders for Elements and Reader. So, if I uninstall Acrobat via Add/Remove I'll remove both Acrobat and Reader, won't I? Does anyone know how I should proceed? Thanks for any advice you can give.
MajoMo
How pwillener said before, with different versions of Acrobat and Reader you will can have troubles. But if you need Acrobat 6.0 installed and to update Reader to v. 8.0 my advice is to uninstall Reader 6.0 without uninstall Acrobat 6.0. Only after install Reader 8.0. You said that you don't have Reader 6.0 to uninstall in Add/Remove. But maybe you can... You can try this: Install this Microsoft utility: Windows Installer Clean Up Open Windows Installer Clean Up - and if Adobe Reader 6.0 is in the list of installed produts you can select it (only Reader, never Acrobat!) and uninstall with this utility. And now you can get Reader 8.0. If Reader 6.0 isn't in this list you can install Reader 8.0, and the installation automatically create the news registry entries and overwrite Reader 6.0. And if the 6.0'folder remain after - don't delete it.
Eldmannen
I heard they will be using GPGPU (General-Purpose Graphics Processing Unit) on the latest graphics cards to enhance the speed of Adobe Reader, this version I think. I wonder when they will use SLI lol!

Moderators rridgely Posted December 22, 2006 Moderators Share Posted December 22, 2006 Well I downloaded it just so I could say I tried it. It is actually much faster than the old one, but still not as snappy as foxit. The download was like 20mb versus foxit which is under 2mb. Installed it takes up 100+mb verus foxit that is well... still under 2mb. Honestly if your just opening pdf files I see no pluses for using adobe instead of foxit. But it is an improvement over the last one.
CilyPudi
Here's a screenshot. Now, I'm going to run the Adobe speed-up program to see if it decreases the file size from its 106 MB. Version 8 does seem a bit faster. CilyPudi wishes all fun holidays! edit: Sorry, I didn't notice that pwillener had already posted a shot. Spork. CilyPudi
I just ran the Adobe Reader SpeedUp program and it worked wonderfully! I've used Foxit and I think the Adobe 8 is now just as fast. The program is super simple and has a easy restore function. As a note, the program suggests you restore Adobe Reader settings anytime before installing updates. Here is another screenshot showing the open bookmarks just FYI Oh yeah, installing SpeedUp did not reduce the Adobe file size, but then, that may have been dumb thinking Spork.
