Google Drive is always disabled at startup of my PC

Recommended Posts

Since I bought CCleaner Professional Plus, Google Drive is always disabled at startup of my PC (Windows 11).

FYI: the configuration setting in Google Drive 'Open Google Drive on system startup' is checked.

In CCleaner I can switch GoogleDriveFS to 'on' (menu Extra, Startup), but after switching off my PC and switching on again, Google Drive is disabled again for starting up.

Has anyone a solution for this problem? Thanks in advance.

Hi Bert Klaver:

What is the edition (Home, Pro, etc), version and build number of your Win 11 OS shown at Settings | System | About | Windows Specifications, and what version of CCleaner Pro Plus are you using?  What is the name and version of your antivirus?

Does Google Drive start at boot-up if you uninstall CCleaner Pro Plus?  Some users have found that the latest CCleaner v6.04 prevents Microsoft Office from starting correctly (see Paul SEPA's 21-Sep-2022 CCleaner 6.04.10044 Prevents All MS Office Apps From Running in the CCleaner Bug Reporting board) and your problem might be related.

If Google Drive still doesn't launch correctly after CCleaner Pro Plus has been uninstalled then try some of the suggestions in How to Launch Google Drive on Startup on Windows? and Top 5 Ways to Fix Google Drive Not Starting on Startup on Windows and Mac.

I don't use Google Drive but there have been reports in the past where CCleaner (Tools | Startup | Windows) did not correctly enable/disable/re-enable startup programs (see Lee3's 2015 CCleaner Will Not Reenable Startup Programs for one example), so it's also possible that this bug has re-appeared in CCleaner v6.04.  If you have confirmed that "Launch Google Drive on the system startup" is enabled in the settings of your Google Drive preferences as shown below then confirm that Google Drive is also Enabled on the Startup tab of WindowsTask Manager.

Hi Imacri,

Thank you for your help. Related to your questions, I did some research; these are the results/answers (plus see attached files / screenshots):

1) CCleaner version: Professional Edition. Version v6.04.10044 (64 bit); paid version

2) Windows 11 Home; version: 22H2 (released 21-09-2022); build: 22621.674; Windows Feature Experience Pack 1000.22634.1000.0

3) Antivirus: Avira Security; version 1.1.75.7 (latest version)

4) Yes, if I have uninstalled CCleaner (deleted from my PC), Google Drive does start up correctly (GoogleDriveFS is enabled; checkbox at preferences is checked).

It seems that CCleaner version 6.04 consistently disables/prevents GoogleDrive from booting when turning on the laptop.

Is there a bugfix for this?
Thank you on forehand for your reply / help to solve this problem.

Best regards,
Bert Klaver

Hi Bert Klaver:

There is currently a known issue with Avira antivirus programs where a feature called "Sentry" (i.e., an engine called sentryeye.exe that is part of the heuristic/behavioural detection of Avira and BullGuard antiviruses) can move executables of several programs like MS Office, Chrome / Firefox / MS Edge browsers, etc. into a folder called C:\Windows\Temp\sentry_temp for monitoring.  When CCleaner, or any other disk cleaner, cleans the Windows temporary files the monitored executables are deleted. Until Avira fixes this bug the recommended workaround is to exclude the C:\Windows\Temp\sentry_temp folder (Options | Exclude | Add | Drive or Folder)  to prevent CCleaner from cleaning this folder (see image below).

See Avira user AW7's 11-Aug-2022 post in CCleaner Corrupting Program Files for a partial list of program executables that were being damaged when CCleaner  purged the contents of their C:\Windows\Temp\sentry_temp folder on their computer, as well as APMichael's 13-Aug-2022 post <here> in that same thread confirming that other disk cleaners like BleachBit cause the same problem when Avira is used as the antivirus.

If excluding this C:\Windows\Temp\sentry_temp folder in CCleaner solves your problem I would suggest you contact Avira customer support (if you have a paid Avira product) or post in the Avira Community and ask if they are currently working on a bug fix.

@lmacri

Whilst we know that there is an issue with Avaira and that temp folder, do you have anything to show that Avira is actually moving the executables?

I had meant to investigate it more myself but never got around to it.

Worried about 'Tracking Files'? Worried about why some files come back after cleaning? See this link:

Hi Imacri,

Many thanks for your help. I did  exclude the C:\Windows\Temp\sentry_temp  folder in CCleaner, and ... it works fine for one week now.
Google Drive starts correct after (re)booting my laptop.

I will post your solution in the Avira Community and ask if they are currently working on a bug fix.

Again: many thanks for your help.

Best regards from the Netherlands,
Bert Klaver

Hi Bert Klaver:

Thanks for the feedback. Just glad to hear your problem is resolved.

All kudos go to @APMichael. I believe they were the first user to suggest the corruption of .exe files might be caused by the Sentry feature in Avira on 11-Aug-2022 in AW7's CCleaner Corrupting Program Files, and APMichael was also the first to suggest <here> in that same thread that Avira users should exclude the C:\Windows\Temp\sentry_temp folder in CCleaner as a temporary workaround until Avira releases a permanent fix.

According to ronster's 02-Aug-2022 post <here> on page 1 of AW7's thread:

Quote

"...After a Custom Clean with CCleaner, some EXE files are corrupted. The files are still there, but the content has been overwritten with spaces. The sizes of the files seems to be the original file sizes of the specific exe file.  It affects many major applications: Excel/Word, VLC Player, Defraggler, ... The list is long. I have to reinstall every single application..."
