TheFiresInTheSky Posted August 18, 2006 Share Posted August 18, 2006 i have an old computer and its been working great till recently, it stopped booting up. nothing on the display. there also isnt any beep coming from the computer anymore. ive tried it on a different monitor just to make sure it was the computer. could it be the HD? MikeW Posted August 18, 2006 Share Posted August 18, 2006 It also protects the bios settings. Flat cmos batt' can happen on old machines that have not been powered up for a long period. Leave the power on for a few hours and then reboot. You may get lucky. You may also have to reconfig bios settings (hard disk type etc) if battery ok. TheFiresInTheSky Posted August 19, 2006 Author Share Posted August 19, 2006 this is pretty weird. i bought a new battery, put it in, it booted fine. i then started to defrag and it just suddenly reboot. i left it like that for about 15 min then decided to try to reboot again. now it put me right back where i was when i started. could it be the power supply or the HD? also, would it be ok to try to change those out with another old computer that i have? they both run 98SE. thanks for your responses. -aaron Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

If you need something a little quicker than scandisk to do a surface scan let me know, I have a DOS utility that's a s**tload faster and it will actually fix what it finds. You may get lucky. and it actually worked. why is that and how can i fix it? andavari, i could use something a little quicker than scandisk, the computer would probably reboot before it got done because the computers a piece of junk, and i dont have a boot disk on me right now. i always lose those things. EDIT: i ran scandisk that was installed in the computer and fixed the errors. im defragging now. after thats done ill try rebooting a few times to see if the problems fixed. Therefore power up the pc and leave it on the battery will be charged after a few hours. Dont forget to check your Bios settings. I've never seen a CMOS battery like that one, I've only encountered the type that look like a battery that goes in for instance a Timex, Casio, etc., digital watch.
