No portable CCleaner 6.00/6.01 version for download?

Please see employee Dave CCleaner's 20-Jun-2022 post in OLLI_S's Cleaner 6.00/6.01 Portable Not Available, which states:

Quote

To confirm, there will not be a portable version of CCleaner 6.01 either, but we are continuing to review how to portable-ize CCleaner 6.02+.

The sticking point is the structural change required for Performance Optimizer although Performance Optimizer would not work properly when the software is being used in a genuinely portable manner.  Although the Portable version is expressly intended "for system admins and advanced users ... not for distribution or mirroring", we know that some third party download sites advertise it as suitable for all users, so we have to make things a little more robust for the general public who may be using Portable contrary to advice.  As such, for the time being we have rolled back the portable version on the website to 5.91 until we can come up with a satisfactory solution.

I can confirm that the download page at https://www.ccleaner.com/ccleaner/builds is now offering the old CCleaner Portable v5.91 (ccsetup591.zip as the recommended version.

When I go to official download page:

https://www.ccleaner.com/ccleaner/builds

Then under CCleaner Portable still only v5.9.1 is listed.

When will v6.* Portable be available for download?

  • Dave CCleaner changed the title to No portable CCleaner 6.00/6.01 version for download?

Majorgeeks likes to be "here first with the news" - but so often because of that it's got the news wrong.

My opinion.

It has installed 6.01 Free version on your machine. There is no 6.01 portable version.

I download it from and Majorgeeks extracted the zip and ran it and it shows v6.01.9825. So whats going on?

Hi Wolfzz:

Actually, there is a portable ccsetup601.zip file on the Piriform download server (https:// download.ccleaner.com/...) if you know where to look for it, but it is not posted on the builds page https://www.ccleaner.com/ccleaner/builds because of the problems it will create if you run the executables in their current state.  I don't know why Piriform hasn't removed this .zip file from their download server.

I downloaded the ccsetup601.zip file from MajorGeeks and previewed it in 7-Zip, and it has the same buggy folder structure as the ccsetup592.zip file that was recently pulled from the builds page (e.g.,  where the CCleaner64.exe is located in the \64x subfolder instead of the "root" folder where it should be with portable.dat).

540731192_7-Zipccsetup601_zip21Jun2022.png.9a3c3c93f2feb07f8a090ce1baa3a602.png

If you execute the CCleaner.exe or CCleaner64.exe executables from their current locations (i.e., without copying and pasting the executables into the "root" folder with portable.dat) you're going to create all sorts of problems.  See mogli's bug report at 5.92 portable broken [download 5.91 from website] about issues switching to a non-English interface plus all the unwanted garbage (e.g., a CCleaner Update task in Task Scheduler and dozens of registry entries) that will be added to your system.  Andavari noted <here> on 06-Jun-2022 in mogli's thread that "Where you unzipped CCleaner Portable make sure the portable.dat file is in the same folder as CCleaner.exe and CCleaner64.exe, it's required so it knows to not create registry data."

I wasted a ridiculous amount of time yesterday cleaning up most of the garbage that CCleaner Portable v5.92 added to my Task Scheduler and registry before I rolled back to v5.91. I'll contact MajorGeeks and suggest they pull that portable ccsetup601.zip file from their servers.

And that is the problem with Majorgeeks and similar sites.

To try and be 'first past the post' they give links to non-released (beta) versions rather than waiting for the official release.

And often, as in this case, that is not a good idea because it's not ready for release yet.

Conclusion: don't download/install anything from 'hot off the  press' websites like majorgeeks - sometimes they grab it befote it even got off the press and it's still unfinished.

Hi Wolfzz:

I just received an email from MajorGeeks informing me that they have pulled CCleaner Portable v6.01 from their servers and replaced it with CCleaner Portable v5.91.  I checked at https://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details/ccleaner_portable.html and confirmed that their download links are currently offering ccsetup591.zip.

I see that CCleaner v6.02 was released today (20-Jul-2022) but the official builds page at https://www.ccleaner.com/ccleaner/builds is still recommending the ccsetup591.zip for CCleaner Portable v5.91.9537 (rel. 16-Mar-2022).  Looks like we'll have to wait a bit longer.☹️

What's the problem????
Many programs use this structure Process_Hacker_Nightly_Build for example

Yes, I don’t argue, it’s not entirely clear, the transition is in changing the structure

But this does not answer my question if Priform decided to change it ... Then why doesn’t it officially publish, but you have to download it through third-party links

Hi LeshaRB:

There is a better discussion about this in mogli's April 22 thread 5.92 portable broken [download 5.91 from website] in the CCleaner Bug Reporting board.  Moderator Andavari's 06-Jun-2022 posted <here> in that thread that "Where you unzipped CCleaner Portable make sure the portable.dat file is in the same folder as CCleaner.exe and CCleaner64.exe, it's required so it knows to not create registry data..."

If you look at the folder structure of the recommended ccsetup591.zip file you will see that CCleaner.exe and CCleaner64.exe are located in the "root" folder with portable.dat.  If you double-click on CCleaner.exe (if you have a 32-bit OS) or CCleaner64.exe (if you have a 64-bit OS) it will not create the unwanted (and unnecessary) scheduled tasks and registry entries I showed <here> in mogli's thread.

67658702_7-Zipv22_01PreviewofGoodCCleanerPortableccsetup591_zipFolderStructure21Jul2022.png.c722adf942245bd81db0d51147ba6b4d.png

If built correctly, a CCleaner Portable app that can be run from a removable USB thumb drive on different computers should not be making changes to the Windows registry when it is launched.  Instead, all custom configuration settings should be stored in the ccleaner.ini file that is created the first time you run CCleaner.exe or CCleaner64.exe.

If you use the buggy ccsetup601.zip file that you downloaded from a third-party site that now has the CCleaner.exe and CCleaner64.exe in the wrong locations and you don't fix this yourself then you will add all sorts of garbage in your Windows registry and create scheduled tasks in Task Scheduler that won't run properly the first time you launch CCleaner.  That is the danger of downloading CCleaner  from third-party sites - you should always use the recommended version posted on the official builds page at https://www.ccleaner.com/ccleaner/builds.

To other users following this thread:

Just a warning that I launched CCleaner Free Portable v5.91 today (the Portable version currently recommended at https://www.ccleaner.com/ccleaner/builds) and saw the pop-up shown below in my system tray asking me to download the buggy v6.02 files, in spite of the fact that I have all automatic updating and available update checks disabled at Options | Updates.  I chose "Remind Me Later" to stay on v5.91.

See my 31-Jul-2022 post in mogil's 5.92 portable broken [download 5.91 from website] for further details.

Just an FYI that CCleaner Portable v6.03.10002 (ccsetup603.zip) has been posted on the official builds page at https://www.ccleaner.com/ccleaner/builds and when I unzipped I could see that the executable files are now back in their correct location in the "root" directory with portable.dat.

See my 22-Aug-2022 post in OLLI_S's CCleaner 6.00/6.01 Portable Not Available for further details.  I've only run a few preliminary checks but so far the Portable v6.03.1002 seems to be working as expected.
