Driver Updater bricked my computer!!!

DO NOT RUN THE DRIVER UPDATER!

I have been using CrapCleaner for over 20 years and never had a problem with it UNTIL I decided to the try the 14 day Professional version this morning and let the Driver Updater do its thing.  As a result, I have a bricked desktop!  The Windows Boot Manager says "...... Windows failed to start......".  Booting into Safe Mode using F8 results in the same screen.  Restore to a Previous Version results in the same screen.  I have spent the last two hours researching online and have tried everything suggested and can't get past that same screen.  This is a nightmare!  Piriform should be held responsible for this disaster.  I will never touch CrapCleaner again!

Same happened to me too. It took ages to run the Driver updater for the 5 drivers announced, next thing I see is that a new start was started (without my ok) and then a blue screen, which I couldn't get out of.

I called my Telekom tech support, for which I pay, and they were unable to help immediately, referring me to a specialist who would not be available over the weekend, so I had to wait until Monday. However tech support gave me at least a couple of hints, mainly pointing to a restore to a previous position.

I right-clicked until I got a restore button, one of 6 possibilities (the other five they said to ignore) so I took the restore route and was given two dates, one of which I took. Again it took ages to happen, but it was successful in the end.

I paid for a pro version especially to get the driver updater, but this gave me more grief than I needed at that particular time.  You have obviously bitten off more than you can chew. Never again. I feel I have been cheated.

Hi @AlanLathan First of all, I am very sorry to hear of how you encountered this problem as a result of using the Driver Updater; I'll immediately report this to our development team as we definitely do not want anyone to have this type of experience when using our software.

To help with our investigation, would you be willing to attach the following files in a reply?

  • C:\Program Files\CCleaner\Data\DUState.dat
  • C:\Program Files\CCleaner\LOG\DriverUpdaterLib.log
  • C:\Windows\INF\setupapi.dev.log

Yes, the driver updater has an unpleasant habit of ignoring the fact that some of the updates require immediate restarts. It just keeps grinding away. This means that one gets the NBA (Nasty Blue Screen) at restart, and the only way back is to re-install Windows 10 and rebuild the PC from scratch. This has happened to me twice in the past week. The only work-around is to run the updates one at a time, which is very time-consuming, and certainly no better than any of the free tools that allow one-at-a-time installation of multiple driver updates.

yeah BIFF same thing happened to me...... My Toughbook Panasonic Military Laptop CF-31 MK4 both are bricked. After being on CCleaner for thousands of years, I was hesitant to install CCLeaner on my Military Laptops, but after installing CCleaner updated all my drivers through Microsoft, I used their CCleaner New Update Driver Program ... said it needed to update 21 drivers, Wuuuuuut ? Seriously

So I opted to use that service after accepting the 14 day trial. It started updating all my 21 drivers I needed, after reset my Supervisor Password was changed. I know my password because I've been using the same password for 20 years, and I know I'm not stupid, my password doesn't work anymore so I know for 1,000 % fact that CCLeaner changed my Supervisor PWD. But CCleaner says no !!!! and after reading your issue regarding your computer being BRICKED. Man what a relief ... so I know I'm not lying or stupid. CCleaner has to believe me now because I have $2K worth of laptops just sitting here BRICKED, it's so upsetting to the point I'm trying to calm myself after these engineers are telling me that's impossible. Well you know in the computer world impossible can be possible. Not all software's are perfect in any which way.

It's upsetting ... my blood is boiling, I know my password and I know CCleaner is responsible for this problem they have with their UPDATE DRIVER program. I hope they fix it .... if they can't at least send me 2 BIOS Chips at $24.00 ea. and I'll fix it myself and replace the BIOS with a non password. Then I'll shut up and not bad mouth CCleaner for their software mistake. Coders aren't perfect.

Don't lie ..... because you won't be able to fix it .... you'll nd to have BIFF change his BIOS CHIP to a non password in order for his computer to be un-bricked or .... get a 64meg BIOS and have it flashed directly to the BIOS Chip .. using a BIOS reader

seriously .... it requires a password to boot ? as for BIFF he probably wasn't using a Supervisor PWD so his was bricked differently. As for my issue, the matter of the fact DRIVER UPDATER on CCleaner is a NO NO .... so the question is WHAT DO I DO WITH MY $2K LAPTOPS BRICKED BY A PASSWORD that has been changed by CCLEANER DRIVERS? That's the BIG QUESITON OF THE YEAR ..... :(

Hi Lageeks, CCleaner could not help me at all. Whatever got into my desktop during the CCleaner driver update managed to get into my laptop because of my stupidity in using a flash drive between them in an attempt to fix the desktop. I had to take it into a computer repair shop and luckily I had a complete backup on a separate hard drive but it cost me near $200. The laptop was a hopeless case so I just switched it over to Linux.

wow $200 and CCLeaner didn't pay that to help you out .... all they did was just probably message you and give you hope or no hope at all. I can't believe it ... CCleaner is a good Cleaner but then again the money they make and they can't even at least cover half of your $200 dollars service fee to get it back working. Luck you, you got it fixed. Me ... I used a BIOS password and I found a fix .. I need to replace the BIOS chip and it costs $24 dollars on ebay ea. I need two .. but I'm hoping they will order it for me and send it to me to shut me up because .. I'll keep fighting for my knowledge of what happened to my laptops that cost $1K ea. Military Laptops. If it was just a plain jane laptop like a DELL or ASUS .. I'll let it slide .. but when it comes to these Military Laptops just sitting here BRICKED .. it's a different story. Good for you Rob you got it working but you had to shell out ..... sadly but we all learn a lesson from using CCLeaner !!!! ARRRGH so upsetting Glad to hear again .. Good Day

to unbrick your computer(s), try "clearing the nvram." that is done in different ways with different computers.

likewise, there are ways to clear a bios password.

use google-search to find information about "clear nvram" and "reset bios password," or "clear bios password."

here is one related article:
