CCleaner on Mac will no longer open

I have used CCleaner (the free version) on my 2013 i-Mac successfully for years. About a year ago it suddenly stopped working. This might have been around the time time my computer became very slow and I put in anoth 16 GB of RAM memory. The problem was CCleaner wouldn't open, and if it did, it just spent forever (literally hours) and found nothing. I tried removing the CCleaner software and replaced with a new download but to no avail. I now have Version 1.18.30, which is an App of 4.6 MB and installed (or published maybe) on 30 Sep. 2020 (I only installed it knowingly yesterday).

Could this version be too new for my now 8 year old computer? How can I best rectify matters?

Double clicking on the icon in the tool bar does nothing, right clicking gives the option "force stop", the right clicking again gives the option "open", but the CCleaner window doesn't open. Nor does it open when right clicking on the App itself.

Many thanks for your help!

Moved to CCleaner for Mac.

It may help anyone answering to known which Mac OS version are you running?

Worried about 'Tracking Files'? Worried about why some files come back after cleaning? See this link:

I am using MacOS Catalina version 10.15.7. When I updated to this version I remember my Word and Excel programmes had to be updated for 32 something...from 16. CCleaner may have stopped working around the same time. Does downloading the latest version of CCleaner automatically replace any old CCleaner software, or could there be old software lurking somewhere in the background on my PC?

CCleaner no longer opens on my Mac, also running Catalina 10.15.7. It still runs in the background, sometimes opens when I use Safari and tells me how many GB it can save, but won't open on the desktop no matter what I try. I'm hoping for a solution in this thread before starting another on the same topic.

Catalina is a 64-bit Mac OS. (So the 16-bit version of Word and Excel would have needed updating to at least 32-bit like you say).

The latest released Free CCleaner for Mac (1.18.30) should still run on Catalina.

I would contact support as johnccleaner says.

Note that there is a later version of CCleaner for Mac (v2.2) but at the moment that is not available to Free users.
The Free version should be available sometime later this year.
Pro users should have had an email about updating, and if you purchase CCleaner for Mac you should get v2.2.

PS. I'm not suggesting that you purchase at this time - If there is an issue with 1.18.30 on your machine then you may have the same issue with 2.2. So try to get the issue with 1.18 sorted out before spending any money.

  • 2 weeks later...

I contacted the support team who responded (someone called Jeth from the Phiipines) suggesting I downloaded the software once again but of course that didn't help.

He said that Piriform were aware of the issues but he was not sure when they would get round to fixing them.

Surely it isn't that difficult to fix software like this?
