Launch the app when computer starts disabled but the app is launched regardless

Hello,
I have a windows 10 OS family version and I am running CCleaner v5.76.8269.
Although I set the application NOT to start when Windows is starting, the app is still lauched in the background.
I must close it everytime I start/re-start my computer.
Is there something I am missing in the settings or is it a bug and unexpected behavior?
Thanks a lot in advance.
Best regards

I think that you are looking at the wrong setting.

'Launch the CCleaner app window each time the computer starts' puts a flashing icon in the system tray when the computer starts, but ony for seconds while the clean is running and it disappears when the clean has finished.

If you mean the icon remains in the system tray (not flashing) then there are two functions that do that:

  1. Smart Cleaning: If you have Smart Cleaning enabled it needs to run in the background to monitor for junk building up, or for a browser being closed.
  2. 'Keep CCleaner updated automatically': This needs to run in the background to periodically check if an update is avaiable. (I believe it checks every 12 hours).

If either of those options is selected then you will get the icon in  the system tray .
If you manualy close it then those functions will stop working.

Hi Nukecad,

I checked the settings and it was actually not the "Keep CCleaner updated automatically" but the "Send notifications when there is a new version".

I unchecked the box and the icon disappeared from the system tray.

Thanks again

Odd, that shouldn't happen.

You can see here that it's ticked but there is no icon in the system tray.

But if I tick automatic updates instead then the icon appears:

Does the icon come back for you if you tick the 'Notify' box (only) again?

We saw a few cases when automatic updates first became available for Free users where it took Windows Task Scheduler a while to sort the new background task out.
(Opening both Smart Cleaning and Automatic Updates and then closing them in a particular order usually gave Windows the poke it needed).

Yours seem to be working as it should now, if it starts playing up again give another shout.

@Franz333 Please read the second post above in this thread.

The icon is put there in the system tray by either 'Smart Cleaning' or 'Keep CCleaner updated automatically' (or both) running in the background.

If you don't want to see the icon again then turn both of those functions off.

'Exiting' from the icon  will stop those features from running in the current session, but will not change the settings in CCleaner itself.
So they will start again on a restart/reboot and put the icon back back in the tray.
The way to stop that happening is to turn them off in CCleaner itself.

Yes but it seems that the "Send me notifications ..." option is also making the app run in the background.

Both "Smart Cleaning" and "Keep CCleaner updated automatically" were turned off yesterday. I kept the "Send me notifications..." on to make the test.

It's ok, not a big deal. I will turn that option off too.

Thanks a lot

Best regards

Sometimes Windows Task Scheduler seems to keep the update task rather than removing it like it should. Not sure why, but it's happened to a couple of users.

This was for a slightly different problem when the automatic updater was first added to Free last November, it was all to do with the order in which things were turned off.
If yours is still playing up then you could try turning both Smart Cleaning and Automatic updates ON and then following the five steps given here, in their exact order,

Alternatively CCleaner is about due for it's next update, you could try waiting for that and see if it changes things for you.
