VHD = Virtual Hard Drive.

I've only ever seen them used by Virtual Machine software, like VMware Player, Oracle VirtualBox and Microsoft Virtual PC to name a few.

I think some backup programs and zip programs may also create VHD files.

Apart from using a virtual machine program to access those files (which are a 'virtual' image of an Operating System), I've used 7-Zip to retrieve files from a VHD image.

Backup now & backup often.
It's your digital life - protect it with a backup.
Three things are certain; Birth, Death and loss of data. You control the last.

You can also mount vhd as a hard drive

Aldo, since you made a VHD in recuva, is it safe to assume you have Recuva Pro? If so, don't forget you have direct to developer priority support so you don't have to rely on the guesswork of us, the userbase :)

ADVICE FOR USING CCleaner'S REGISTRY INTEGRITY SECTION

DON'T JUST CLEAN EVERYTHING THAT'S CHECKED OFF.

Do your Registry Cleaning in small bits (at the very least Check-mark by Check-mark)

ALWAYS BACKUP THE ENTRY, YOU NEVER KNOW WHAT YOU'LL BREAK IF YOU DON'T.
