Moderators Andavari Posted July 17, 2015 Moderators Share Posted July 17, 2015 This powerful big tornado started forming over Burlington, Iowa where I live early in the evening last night, and then went across the river and caused severe damage in Cameron, Illinois which is a short drive from where I live. Moderators hazelnut Posted July 17, 2015 Moderators Share Posted July 17, 2015 I'm glad we hardly ever have anything like that in the UK. Stay safe over there. Moderators Andavari Posted July 17, 2015 Author Moderators Share Posted July 17, 2015 We were in the basement until 6:20pm last night when they cancelled the tornado warning for Burlington, IA, and it was a very eerie storm that was literally "the calm before the big storm" because there wasn't a sound outside - something which I've seen hundreds of times before living in the midwest. When I came up from the basement I looked east towards the river and Illinois and the sky looked black and ominous, and then I think at 6:39pm the TV weather stated a trained spotter spotted a huge tornado that was moving slowly at 25mph. It was on the ground for a very long time!

Corona
Quite a few derechos & derecho-esque systems ran through the upper mid-west this summer already. I love the look of those clouds but would not want to experience them in my face.
Moderators Andavari Posted July 18, 2015 Author Moderators Share Posted July 18, 2015 Quite a few derechos & derecho-esque systems Those can do very wide-spread damage since they're often called land hurricanes.
Corona
Still, not as scary as those sharknados.
