had to do four PC's today with the sfc  /scannow  command to fix Outlook not sending problem.

more than coincidence I think for it not to be a small bug in some MS product somewhere.

I'm starting to just do that command by default now for any Win10 upgrade after Office is installed.

Growing concerns now about the amount of Win 7 users who are having Win 10 downloaded to their machine and even trying to install itself despite the fact they never opted in.

Long thread but so worth reading if you have a Win 7 machine.

Most users don't even have 'show hidden files' enabled because if they did they would see the $ Windows~BT and $ Windows~WS folders already downloaded to their machine.

http://forums.mydigitallife.info/threads/65002-Windows-10-upgrade-is-now-FORCE-installing-to-Windows-7-PC-s-without-users-consent!

Don't get me wrong I have upgraded from 8.1 to Win 10 on one of my machines, but my other is Win 7 and despite never asking for it the folders are there and I keep getting asked even when not installing some of the optional updates. I'm reluctant to run all the .bat files etc as I think until MS stops doing this workarounds will just get ovewritten.

On XP your machine folder was called 'My Computer' which implied some form of ownership, now it's called 'This PC'

Microsofts quote on this is......

“For those who have chosen to receive automatic updates through Windows Update, we help customers prepare their devices for Windows 10 by downloading the files necessary for future installation. This results in a better upgrade experience and ensures the customer’s device has the latest software.”

I don't have Automatic updates turned on.

You will be assimilated. . . Resistance is futile . . .

Seriously, Hazelnut have you uninstalled the updates that download win 10 AND hidden them for your win 7 computers?

I ask because I'm wondering how to handle the situation when I finally turn on the win 7 desktop and the win 8 (not 8.1) laptop.

It would help to know if that worked for you.   :)

I will make an image of the present configurations of course, but it would be nice to stop the updates from asking.

The CCleaner SLIM version is always released a bit after any new version; when it is it will be HERE :-)

No I haven't hidden them. I don't install all optionals and I just click away the Win 10 upgrade offer.

There is a slight concern in my mind that by hiding and uninstalling some updates I might miss something important.

I won't upgrade this Win 7 laptop to 10 no matter what.

Anyway I have an image in case all goes pear shaped (plug for Piriform there!)

hazelnut I to have a Win 7 PC that despite not opting to upgrade to Win10 still shows it as an "update available" whenever I check for my normal Win 7 updates.

I do not have "automatic updates" turn on...........it is turned off. When ever I need to download a normal Win 7 update I need to be very careful to de-select the Win 10 upgrade and only select my nominated Win 7 updates.

However my "$Windows.~BT" folder still appears and contains 2 sub folders, "DUDownload" 59.5MB and "Sources" 86.2MB. These folders I'm guessing are created when one originally "reserved" the Win 10 upgrade prior to July 29.

Also Interesting I find is the similar folders on my standard Win 8.1 upgrade to Win 10, "$Windows.~BT" 1.1GB and "Windows.~WS" a whopping 5.78GB Again all these folders are hidden system folders/files.

Important message to all: Create your backup's regularly...........I myself praise Macrium Reflect every day.

If I read this right, picking and choosing your updates will soon not be possible in win 10.

As far as I can tell that just means that if "I" upgrade to 10 in five months I won't have to install 60 separate updates, maybe just 4 or 5

I noticed this week that "Update to Windows 10" is now available in the regular "Windows Update" screen. It's listed under the "Optional" updates. And this is in addition to the "Download Windows 10" system tray icon.

I hope this feature makes it to Win 10 'normal' builds soon.

There are two versions of Windows 10: the one you buy at retail or obtain from the Get Windows 10 free upgrade system, and the testing version available to members of the Windows Insider program. The latest test build -- version 10565, available to Insiders who are on the fast ring (the group that gets the quickest updates but the most instability) -- introduced a helpful new feature: you can now activate Windows 10 using a product key originally meant for Windows 7, 8, or 8.1.

Odd. Now the "Update to Win 10 Pro" on my Win 7 system is gone from the "Optional Updates" screen. But the "Update to Win 10" system tray icon is still "alive & kicking" every time I start my system. Odd.

Nergal, is one method preferable over the other?

Depends on the trustworthiness of the link. And the reason for posting it (in this case it was posted to create a link to an article you wished us to read on the subject)

"Petition asks Microsoft to fix two glaring shortfalls in Windows 10". Brilliant idea.

http://www.infoworld.com/article/2994120/microsoft-windows/petition-asks-microsoft-to-fix-two-glaring-shortfalls-in-windows-10.html

@Nergal: Accidentally "pushing out Win 10" ??? I don't think so. I am NOT convinced.

I think Microsoft simply tries to "Push the envelope" as far as possible. Only when they run into resistance then they will undo (one or more of) those step. MS simply tries to see with much they can get away with. Time for MORE pushback !!!!
