I like that this is a 5 year lts release. I may give this a try on my laptop just to give it a shot.

Edit:

Tried it on a usb drive. Wouldn't load, just got a blank screen. Odd because I tried the latest ubuntu and it booted fine. I even redownloaded the file and tried again. Oh well, maybe next time.

My PC mag this month also did a few-page-spread about it and basically gave it rave reviews.

I've had Ubuntu on one of my rigs for about 2 years now so might ditch it and give mint a spin.  (what else can you do on a rainy weekend - just got to wait for one now)

Hello rridgely - Did you get just a blank screen, period? Or did you see the grub boot menu first, then a blank screen when the desktop was supposed to appear? In the first case, I would suspect a corrupted .iso file was used to create the bootable USB stick. This is solved by doing a MD5Checksum first to validate the integrity of the .iso file. It could also be the utility software you used to create the bootable USB stick. Try using Rufus, I've found it to be the most versatile and reliable. The link is here: http://rufus.akeo.ie/

In the second case, if you saw the grub menu, I would suspect a video driver issue. In this case, when the grub boot menu appears, try booting in Compatibility Mode and see if you get to the desktop. What brand and model is the video device on the system? Linux Mint does have driver issues with some of the newest AMD and Nvidia devices, but there are ways to get around this. Post back if this is the case, I'm a member of the Linux Mint forum, and the people there are more than willing to help.

I have it running on a virtual machine right now. Need to put it on a usb to test if this version plays nicer with UEFI. Have already noticed Cinnamon to be smoother then before. B)

It booted to the menu that said install, load, ect. When I chose to load it then it just went to a blank screen.

My laptop is a standard intel haswell I5, with intel wifi, and intel graphics. Should be 0 compatibility problems but it didn't load. Might try again later.

  • 1 month later...

I had the same black screen issue (little slow at getting around to testing it)
the workaround I used was when grub showed I highlighted the 1st option, pressed e then added acpi_backlight=vendor after quiet splash on the kernel line,  f10 to boot. then I was able to install it.

found that out only after I downloaded and tried to boot a few other versions.

For you iso-a-holics out there here's another to try

It doesn't get any easier to use than this for a new to 'anythingotherthanwindows' user.

Everything is just there in front of you. Chromium is default browser.

Hazelnut, you are indeed a temptress! If only I weren't so involved with Zorin OS9 at the moment, I'd take you up on your offer. ;)
