grits2
This question actually applies to both CCleaner & Speccy, but am hoping I don't have to ask in separate areas? I have both programs already but not the newest versions. Is it best to just update over the top of what I have or uninstall old & install new ones? Thanks, grits
Moderators TwistedMetal Posted April 25, 2013 Moderators Share Posted April 25, 2013 There is no need to uninstall. Just update over the current version. Moderators mta Posted April 26, 2013 Moderators Share Posted April 26, 2013 hope I don't tread on your toes @TwistedMetal , but going on past posts, it seems an unlucky few have had to uninstall the current versions first. personally, I've never needed to, and it seems the vast majority simply install over the current version. so there should be no need, but sometimes it's needed. Moderators Andavari Posted April 26, 2013 Moderators Share Posted April 26, 2013 so there should be no need, but sometimes it's needed. If the registry settings are messed up then yes sometimes it's necessary. Personally I've never once had any settings problems using the INI file for the settings in CCleaner - well that being they're also very easy to edit/fix once in an INI. pwillener
If you uninstall, you may lose your settings. I have never uninstalled.
grits2
@Andavari, I don't even know what you mean by "INI file. 99.9% of anything in my machine is at Default Settings because most of what I read in 'Options' might as well be printed in a foreign language, I don't know what I'm supposed to pick or unpick. I probably shouldn't even be allowed to have a computer due to my lack of knowledge.
Moderators Andavari Posted April 26, 2013 Moderators Share Posted April 26, 2013 I don't even know what you mean by "INI file. CCleaner -> Options -> Advanced -> Save all settings to INI file Takes all settings out of the registry and puts them into ccleaner.ini which will be in the same folder/path where CCleaner.exe is. Is it better to use ini rather than registry?
Moderators Andavari Posted August 25, 2013 Moderators Share Posted August 25, 2013 If you're using the installation version there is no better vs worse, it just stores the settings differently. I however use the portable version which always uses the INI file.
grits2
Sorry for this dumb question but can't seem to find an answer otherwise. Are "portable" & "slim" the same thing? I did see something that kinda sounded like the "slim version" is intended more for 'advanced' people, not a 'novice'. ???
Moderators Nergal Posted August 27, 2013 Moderators Share Posted August 27, 2013 Slim=installer without monetary add-ons (Chrome/Google-Toolbar) Portable=No installer Zip file with added file that forces ini file settings (see above) and can be placed on a memory stick/card and used on multiple pcs (personally owned) ADVICE FOR USING CCleaner'S REGISTRY INTEGRITY SECTION DON'T JUST CLEAN EVERYTHING THAT'S CHECKED OFF. Do your Registry Cleaning in small bits (at the very least Check-mark by Check-mark) ALWAYS BACKUP THE ENTRY, YOU NEVER KNOW WHAT YOU'LL BREAK IF YOU DON'T.
